I'm not all that musical, so for me it's usually a case of choosing a song I'd like to learn & then trying to find a style to suit.

I'm finding Band in a Box handy for learning my songs. I type song's chord progression into BIAB. BIAB plays the L/H chords on the PA3X, which leaves me free to just play melody & choose which styles & which variations might sound best for the song.

Once I've settled on the style, I then learn to play the chords & melody together.
