I use a couple of homemade fake-books (4 of them, actually)...probably about 800 songs in total.

I rarely read the music when playing, but if I don't have it, I really miss it...sort of a crutch I guess. I use a combination of memorizing and reading music, so, I guess it works for me.

All the tunes have the style used and the tempo at the top of the page....some even have several possible styles.

The first time I saw a buddy of mine drop his music pad reader device on the tile floor, and it no longer worked...ever, I was very content to remain using the old-fashioned but relatively unbreakable books. They have never let me down.

Sometimes, at least for me, "new" isn't always better.
