Texting is ONE bad thing that happens to distract drivers, but there are so many others, and it's impossible to outlaw everything that takes your hands off the wheel. I am all for banning the use of hand held devices in cars, but what about those who shave, put on makeup, drink coffee (me), search for CD's, read maps .. the list is endless. Texting is the worst offender, and I'd like to see an auto shutoff in the cars ignition system somehow, but sadly - once all that is done - there are all those other things to tackle.
Here's a short story ... and a true one:

A small town in Maine in the 70s advertised a game called "BEANO" at a local church. When an out-of-towner (my Dad) asked what the game was, the reply was: "It's like BINGO, but the town got together and outlawed the playing of bingo because they did not approve of gambling." The law was passed, the name of the game was changed, and the gambling goes on. It took so long to pass the first law that they lost steam on the cause. I swear it's true. I was there.

My point - laws can be stupid. Awareness needs to be raised to ALL forms of distracted driving hazards ... not just texting.
