the d-beam works as a switch by breaking incoming light..some d-beams may be more sensitive in lower
light than mine, , but none will operate in very low light or the dark. it is only a switch, no more..it is no more an expressive tool than any manual button or switch would be, and less expressive than a dial or slider would be.
