I totally agree on the AKG D5. It's just as you described.
I have a BUNCH of mics including Sennheiser 855, Shure SM58, Samson Q7 and R5, Heil, EV 767, CAD, etc., but I keep coming back to the D5. All the others certainly have their strong points and are great in various applications, but I like the AKG best.
