I generally put them 4 ticks/clocks apart. Give them the values of the patch you want to select according to the tables on

(2) p. 181, where the same procedure is explained ("Changing a sound during a song" --> "Changing the Patch"); follow the step-by-step instructions under in the second column on p. 181.

Note that you can do this either by (1) recording the button press of the patch or (2) creating the CCs and PC in Microscope Mode -> Create Event.
