A program called GNMidi is wonderful for converting .mid to .kar and vice versa. It has preset parameters for Tune 1000 files and others, or you can set your own. It also allows you to make practically any other changes to the file, including transpose, error detection, etc.
There is a free trial, and then it is quite inexpensive to register. It was designed and is supported by a very nice person named Gunter Nagler.
