OMB will get you started http://www.1manband.nl/omb.htm as this is a software arranger, (A Demo version can be downloaded so that you can try before you buy) it will use the sound card in your computer, so the quality of sound will be determined by this, however when you are familiar with its operation it can be setup to use other software instruments. (VSTs etc)

What is the advantage of running a VST like B4 through OMB? I too am trying to understand soft synths.
