No offense Ian (I REALLY don't want to start another flame-war!), but I DID make a point of qualifying my remarks as 'in my opinion'.
But I'm sure your statement was meant that way, too....
So far, I have NO problems using the FantomX piano patch in a style (as I said, it's warm at lower velocities, but still quite sparkly at higher ones), plus I have the option of using the new 3-band parametric EQ to sculpt out a little warmth if I need a bit more 'bite'.
Opinions about piano sounds are as varied as the players that play them, so I certainly don't think you are wrong. But simply that you stated an opinion, not a fact...
As I said initially, a VERY telling way to use the Purgatory Creek site is to buzz quickly from one mp3 to another, and A/B them. Has anyone tried this, yet..? What do you think?
A truer, apples to apples comparison does not exist, and I wish there were more sites like this to compare drum kits, bass sounds, saxes, etc., with standardized files.
PLEASE don't take this the wrong way Ian... I am NOT trying to antagonize you, but simply to clarify for any less experienced member surfing in that all ANY of us say is simply opinion. Listening for yourselves, and trying the equipment out yourself is the ONLY way to make up your mind... IMO!
