Hi Richard,
try the forte demo even if it does have dropouts, at least you can see if it works. It's not free though.
I don't have it installed in my new laptop as I only use soundfonts, and it has a soundfont compatible card built in.
From memory,( and it's poor) I think you can assign midi channels to different instruments.
You can do a lot of stuff in Forte.
