The only way this can work is if he has a midi connection on his laptop and a midi connection on his harmonizer that essentially communicate with each other. The channel that reads the chord changes must match at both ends, and both pieces of equipment must be set to the correct channel in order for this to work. And, not all midi files will do this properly. Some will have to be modified in order to transmit the chord changes.
