I always tell people I'm not a great reader, but that's not completely true. I read pretty good when have to. I'm not classically trained (basic accordion and pop organ lessons only) and never had to follow bass clef, so my skills are not what I would call top notch and certainly not what I would like them to be. But 45+ years of playing almost everything from church music to R&R has helped me become a decent reader in spite of myself. I read mainly to LEARN then I mostly play by heart and/or ear, using a lot of personal editing. Most people seem to like my playing style so I guess I've done alright.
