Carlos: Ahhhhhhh! I think I get it NOW! Yamaha devised a copy protection scheme to keep people from editing their internal styles, but as a result, this prevented us from being able to edit (step edit mode) our own custom styles as well. MANY thanks for your explaination as well as directing us to the solution: Michael Besedem's "Style Edit" utility.
