I don't think C is always the easiest key, but if you must use a transpose button .... be careful not to go too far. Some parts sound yucky if they are raised or lowered too much.
As for reading ...... I hardly ever do. I listen to the arrangement and transcribe it as it plays. Call me and I'll walk you through my method.
