Sad but so true in many cases. But, when that miracle happens, the venu allows it and you find the right people, it's fabulous!

I use a sideman as often as possible mostly to keep myself entertained. Luckily, I have some really good ones to call. It is comforting to know that, if any one of the events above happen, my arranger and I will be fine.For me, playing with other players...sharing ideas and shooting from the hip (if it's that kind of gig)is a large part of why I play.
