I have a Pa80 and normally simply record on my D1600 multitrack, however, I recently got a good deal on Sonar 2.2 and decided to see if I could learn to use it with the Pa80. I set up 16 midi tracks in Sonar, clicked on record, hit the style catagory button on the Pa80 and then selected the particular style I wanted and started to play the song. At the end, I stopped every thing and played it back. CONFUSION and MASS NOISE! So, I started deleting tracks one at a time until there was only one left and everything sounded just like I played it, including the STS (equivalent of Yamaha OTS) changes. So what I had was a midi type 0 file. Now what I want is a midi type 1 where each instrument is on its own track. How do I set up both Sonar and the Pa80 internally to do that? I would like to be able to see each track individually so I can edit it and so I can see it as staff notation and so I can change the solo instruments to see how something different would sound without having to re-record everything. Anyone know how to do what I want? Thanks, ------------------ IP: Logged |

Hi Tom, First of all, congratualations on adding Sonar to your arsensal of toys. I know you're going to find it a terrific software addition, especially in conjunction with your Korg D1600, as you'll be able to transfer WAV files to and from the D1600 (via USB) to your PC & Sonar for powerful post production editing. As a Sonar owner first, I kinda went the opposite direction as you did, recently purchasing the Korg D1200mkII. ![]() Tom, you can instantly convert midi type 0 files to midi type 1 using the following freeware software utility: Tom, btw, thanks again for turning me on to the 'KorgStudios.com' forum. Hello: Scott is almost right, if the recorder is the D1600 (silver)it does NOT have USB, but if it is the new D1600MKII (just release in blue)it will..... Unlike the D1200 and D1200MKII both have USB....Another tip, is to make a template for the Sonar with the instrument definitions ( PA 80 of course ), and is possible that the Sonar will properly with the Korg. A third way in case that you want to transfer the raw data from ( assuming that you have the D1200 ), is to back up the waves in CDs and transfer them into the PC. I hope it helps, and Feliz NAvidad y Prospero aņo nuevo. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Well, guys, actually I already know how to transfer from the D1600 to my laptop for editing/mastering, which I've been doing ever since I got it 1 1/2 years ago. I edit/master using Sound Forge 7, Wavelab 4 and TrackS 24. However, my problem right now is how to get all of the tracks in a style playing on the Pa80 to record on individual tracks in Sonar all at once. In other words, I want to get the trap set to record on track 10, the bass on track 1, accompaniment 1 thru 5 on separate tracks in Sonar and the melody right 1, 2, and 3 and left to all record on separate tracks within Sonar all at the same time. Right now, all of those things record on only one track; I want to separate them. Anyone know how to do that? BTW Scott, you are most welcome for the recommendation about korgstudios.com. Glad you are finding it useful. Thanks, ------------------ IP: Logged |

Tom, I may be wrong (wouldn't be the first time, eh ?), but.... I think you have to go to the Global setttings, MIDI out (page 16-5 of the 3.0 Eng manual) and set each midi channel to the one you want. I believe you then have two choices... I would recommend #1 as there are .doc files in the download that detail how to set it up. IP: Logged |

Years ago I transferred some midi files from my Ensoniq SD1 into Cakewalk (Sonar's predecessor) and I think theres a setting somewhere which tells it to split multiple midi channels to individual tracks upon record. Equally I think the "set up 16 tracks to record on individual midi channels" technique should also work fine. IP: Logged |

Well, I'm ALMOST there! Last night I went into the global page in the Pa80 and found out that the normal setup is for upper 1,2,3 and lower to be on channels 1 thru 4. Channels 5 thru 8 are off, channel 9 is bass, 10 is drums (trap set), 11 is percussion, and 12 thru 16 are accompaniment 1 thru 5. So I went into Sonar and setup 12 midi tracks and recorded once through "Angels From On High". When I played it back everything but the drums were piano, BUT it recorded everything on separate tracks, so I went in and changed upper 1 to "Sweet Harmonica" (wonder where Korg got that name, LOL) and the bass to fretless and muted everything else, and it played back OK! So now I have to go looking through all the papers I have looking for a tutorial by either Steve or AJ (I don't remember which) that was about how to customize a style so I can learn how to find out what is actually on accompaniment 1 thru 5 so I can set that up in Sonar and then it'll work the way I want! HOORAY!!!! Thanks guys, ------------------ IP: Logged |
