 KN 2000 disk drive dilemma!

I recently cannibalized the fully operational disk drive from a banged up older KN 2000 and used it to replace the damaged disk drive in my other "newer" KN 2000. However, the newly installed drive no longer recognizes the data on my set up disks. I get a message indiating that the disk was created "for another unit". They loaded and played perfectly in both drives prior to the switch. Why wont they do so now??? Does exchanging a drive affect the way it reads data on the disks??? Thoughts? IP: Logged |

I don't really remember a lot about Technics older keyboards but one trick which often worked in a case like this was to stick some Sellotape over the hole on the floppy (not the write protect hole - the other one) before inserting it. This is because there used to be 2 kinds of disks - Double Density & High Density disks - it may be expecting to read the older type. I have had this problem with my Technics SMAC 1200 (including the same or similar, error message)and that used to work with that. I appreciate that the drive worked in the other keyboard so, in theory, it should work now but, in this wonderful world of changing technology, anything can happen so give it a try. IP: Logged |

Could it have something with the memory settings to do? I know that you can press down three or four buttons somewhere, while the power is turned on and the result is that it comes back to factory defaults. If Alec is reading this, I am pretty sure he fixes the problem Lindoz IP: Logged |

Helo ykc, 1) Lindoz is correct in suggesting you initialise your 'newer' KN2000 back to it's FACTORY setting. I'm sorry I don't know which buttons to press, but if you have a manual, the information should be in there. If not, try asking Bill Norrie as he has great knowledge of all the Technics keyboards. 2) I would then FORMAT the new Drive using the KN2000 keyboard. Do NOT use your computer to format it. Over the years, I have learned that if a Hard Drive, Floppy or SD Card is formatted using the PC, Technics keyboards cannot always read the data, particularly copies. So to avoid possible problems I not only format using the KN, but I also do a 'test' save, to a floppy or SD Card which in turn, set ups the keyboard and enables it to quickly recognise all future Technics data. I'm not saying it is 'foolproof' but it is certainly worth a try. Good luck! Audrey

I really hate to bring discouraging news but I worked with a electronic engineer who was able to disassemble my Kn2000 into tiny pieces but after three months we gave up. We found that most of Technics keyboard products were not very friendly, especially the disk drive -- it was made special for that keyboard. The Kn2000 is still a nice keyboard. I have a Kn5000 it is great in it’s own way, a bit different than the Kn7000. (sound) If I could find a way to use a different storage device (not the floppy disk) the kn5000 would be a keeper.
