          Section 1. Getting Started

          INTRODUCTION

The Off-Line Editor and Librarian will save you time and give you
more control of the sounds you create on your Technics Musical
Instrument. Pressing the ENTER key performs the action or makes
the selection highlighted. The ESCAPE key cancels the action
selected and takes you to the previous menu.

          1. Start by loading a SONG from disk into memory.

When you highlight LOAD in the Main Menu and press ENTER, a
list of every SONG on the disk appears. Move the highlight
to the SONG you want to Edit and press ENTER again.

          2. With a SONG loaded the name for each SOUND in TONE MEMORY is
displayed on the screen. Select a function from the Menu
along the bottom of the screen.

The EDIT function takes you directly to a screen where you
               can adjust every setting.

To duplicate a SOUND in another TONE MEMORY use COPY. To
exchange one TONE MEMORY for another, use SWAP.

The WRITE function is selected automatically as you leave
the EDIT screen. It is included as a Menu Selection for
progressively editing and writing a SOUND to more than one
               TONE MEMORY.

The LIBRARY selection keeps your SONG in memory and
               activates the LIBRARY Menu.

          3. In the LIBRARY you can store and retrieve individual TONE
MEMORY Locations to and from a Library File.

To store a TONE MEMORY Location select EXPORT from the
LIBRARY Menu. The computer will allow you to CREATE a new
Library File or APPEND the TONE MEMORY to an existing
               Library.

To retrieve a TONE MEMORY into the SONG in memory select
IMPORT. The computer will list the available Library Files
and, when you select one of them, list the TONE MEMORY
               Locations available.

                                          1

          4. You are now ready to SAVE the SONG from memory back to disk.
Selecting SAVE from the Main Menu brings up a list of every
SONG on the disk. Highlight an available SONG name, press
ENTER, and the SONG is automatically saved. If you selected
an existing SONG name you are asked to confirm the
overwrite, or to INSERT only the TONE MEMORY Locations into
               the existing SONG.

                                          2

          INSTALLATION

In this chapter we will describe the installation of the Off-Line
Editor & Librarian on your computer system. Do not skip this
section. It is strongly recommended that you run the Editor &
Librarian using copies of the distribution diskettes.

          Back-Up the Distribution Diskette
Before proceeding with the Installation and use of the Editor &
Librarian, make a back-up copy of the original diskette.

Please Note: Under Copyright Law you are permitted to make
copies for your personal use. It is a violation
of International Copyright Law to make copies for
                         other persons.

The easiest way to make a back-up copy, on any system, is to use
the DOS DISKCOPY Command. You will need a blank diskette and
copy of your main DOS Disk for the DISKCOPY program.

          1. Perform your usual Computer Start-Up procedure.

          2. Make sure the DISKCOPY program is on the disk you are using.
If you are using a floppy disk system, use the DOS DIRectory
Command to check the disk for the DISKCOPY program. If you
are using a Hard Disk system, change to the sub-directory
where the DISKCOPY program is located.

          3. At the DOS prompt, type:

               DISKCOPY [d: [d:]]

and press Enter. Where the first "d:" identifies the disk
drive containing the original distribution diskette or
"Source", and the second identifies the drive containing the
"Target" diskette. (They may be the same drive.)

          4. The computer will prompt you to insert the "Source" or
original diskette and when to insert the "Target" or Back-Up
diskette. The Target diskette will be a duplicate of the
               original distribution diskette.

          5. Put the original distribution diskette in a safe place.

                                          3

Installing the Editor & Librarian On a Computer with a Hard Disk

          1. Perform your usual Computer Start-Up procedure.

          2. Make a sub-directory for the Editor & Librarian. At the DOS
               prompt, type:

               MKDIR \ED&LIB

and press ENTER. The computer will create the sub-directory
and return you to the DOS prompt.

          3. To move into the sub-directory, type:

               CD \ED&LIB

and press ENTER. (If you use the DOS Command PROMPT $P$G
the DOS prompt will display the directory level.)

          4. Now, to copy the files from the Back-Up diskette to the
sub-directory on the Hard Disk, type:

               COPY [d:]*.*

and press ENTER. (Again,"d:" identifies the drive that
contains the Back-Up copy of the program diskette.) This
command will copy the program and other files from the
diskette into the Hard Disk sub-directory.

          5. You are now ready to begin working with the Editor &
               Librarian program.

                                          4

Installing the Editor & Librarian On a Floppy Disk System
If your computer boots from a Floppy Disk you may install the
Editor & Librarian on a "System Disk". This will enable you to
boot the computer and the program in "One Step". You will need a
blank diskette and copy of your main DOS Disk for the FORMAT
          program.

For Computer Systems with Two Floppy Disk Drives
Please note that, although the Editor & Librarian is distributed
on a 3.5" diskette, it can be run from any size diskette,
          including 5.25" 360K or 1.2M, or 1.44M 3.5" diskettes.

          1. Perform your usual Computer Start-Up procedure.

          2. Make sure the FORMAT program is on the disk you are using.
Use the DOS DIRectory Command to check the disk for the
               FORMAT program.

          3. At the DOS prompt, type:

               FORMAT /S [d:]

and press ENTER. The computer will prompt you to place the
blank disk into the drive indicated by the "d:", (usually
the "B:" drive), and to press ENTER when ready. The "/S"
parameter instructs the FORMAT program to transfer the
System Files necessary for "booting" the computer to the
disk being formatted. (Check your DOS Manual for other
command line switches that may be necessary for the version
               of DOS you are using.)

          4. Now, use the DOS COPY Command to COPY the files from the
Back-Up of the program disk to the new System Disk you
created above. Leave the new System Disk in the B: drive
and put the Back-Up disk in the A: drive and, at the DOS
               prompt, type:

               COPY *.* B:

and press ENTER. The program files will now be transferred
to the new "bootable" System Disk.

          5. Consult your DOS documentation to create an AUTOEXEC.BAT
file that will automatically run the Editor & Librarian at
               Start-Up.

                                          5

For Computer Systems with One Floppy Disk Drive
In the event that your computer has only one disk drive it will
be necessary to swap diskettes during the editing process. Once
the Editor & Librarian is running, you can remove the diskette,
and insert the Song Disk into the computer. Library Files can go
on the same diskette as the program or your SONG Files.
Depending on where, you may have to swap diskettes to make use of
          Library Files.

          1. Perform your usual Computer Start-Up procedure.

          2. Make sure the FORMAT program is on the disk you are using.
Use the DOS DIRectory Command to check the disk for the
               FORMAT program.

          3. Then, at the DOS prompt, type:

               FORMAT /S

and press ENTER. The computer will prompt you to place the
blank diskette into the disk drive, and press ENTER when you
have done so. (The computer may prompt you to place the
original DOS System Disk back into the drive to copy the
               necessary system files.)

          4. Remove the System disk from the drive and put the Back-Up
copy of the Editor & Librarian into the drive. Now copy the
contents of the Back-Up disk to the new System diskette.
(Consult your DOS documentation on how to accomplish this on
               a single drive system.)

          5. This disk will now be used to boot your computer for use
               with the Editor & Librarian.

          6. To run the Edit & Librarian upon "booting" the computer,
consult your DOS documentation to create an AUTOEXEC.BAT
               file.

                                          6

          Section 2. Basic Operation

          STARTING THE PROGRAM

In this chapter we will describe how to start the Off-Line Editor
& Librarian on your computer system. It is strongly recommended
that you run the Editor & Librarian using copies of the
          distribution diskettes.

Running the Editor & Librarian On a Computer with a Hard Disk

          1. Perform your usual Computer Start-Up procedure.

          2. To move into the sub-directory containing the Editor &
               Librarian, type:

               CD \ED&LIB

and press ENTER. (If you use the DOS Command PROMPT $P$G
the DOS prompt will display the directory level.)

          3. To run the Editor & Librarian program, at the DOS prompt,
               type:

EDKN.... (fill in the number of your keyboard for
                         example EDKN1000)

and press ENTER. You are now ready to begin working with
               the Editor & Librarian program.

Running the Editor & Librarian On a Floppy Disk System

For Computer Systems with Two Floppy Disk Drives
Please note that, although the Editor & Librarian is distributed
on a 3.5" diskette, it can be run from any size diskette.

          1. Perform your usual Computer Start-Up procedure.

          3. At the DOS prompt, type:

EDKN.... (fill in the number of your keyboard for
                         example EDKN1000)

and press ENTER. You are now ready to begin working with
               the Editor & Librarian program.

                                          7

          4. Consult your DOS documentation to create an AUTOEXEC.BAT
file that will automatically run the Editor & Librarian upon
               System Start-Up.

For Computer Systems with One Floppy Disk Drive
In the event that your computer has only one disk drive it will
          be
necessary to swap diskettes during the editing process.

          1. Perform your usual Computer Start-Up procedure.

          2. Remove the System Diskette you used to "boot" the computer
an insert the Back-Up diskette containing the Editor &
               Librarian program.

          3. At the DOS prompt, type:

EDKN.... (fill in the number of your keyboard for
                         example EDKN1000)

and press ENTER. The opening Menu screen of the program
               will appear.

          4. Remove the Back-Up program diskette and insert your Song
Disk. You are now ready to begin working with the Editor &
               Librarian program.

          5. To run the Edit & Librarian upon "booting" the computer,
consult your DOS documentation to create a System Disk and
               an AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

                                          8

          OPERATING THE MENU SYSTEM

The Editor & Librarian is operated by a series of Menus. The
function of each Menu Item is described in the chapter for that
Menu. The Menu Item or Voice Parameter that is "selected"
appears on screen in reverse video, or is "highlighted".

          Selection of Menu Items
To select a Menu Item or Voice Parameter move the highlight with
          the keyboard cursor control keys:

Depending on your computer these keys may be part of your numeric
keypad, a special function of another key requiring a special
shift key, or a group of separate keys on the right side of the
          keyboard.
The Home and PgUp keys move the highlight to the first Menu Item
and the End and PgDn keys move the highlight to the last Menu
          Item.
          Performing Menu Item Functions
Pressing the ENTER key performs the function associated with the
Menu Item that appears on screen in reverse video, or is
          "highlighted".

          Canceling Menu Item Functions
If you should happen to select a Menu Item you did not want, use
the ESCape key. This cancels the function and takes you back to
the Menu where the function was selected.

All of the functions that LOAD or SAVE your Songs from disk to
the computer's memory and back, require two steps to operate. If
at any time during these steps you want to change your mind about
the selection you made, you have only to press the ESCape key to
          cancel your selection.

                                          9

          Section 3. Using the Program

          The Main Menu

When the Editor & Librarian program is started the Main Menu will
appear at the top of the screen. The functions of this Menu are
primarily concerned with copying the SONG to and from the
diskette and the computers memory, specifying which of your
computer systems disk drives and directories will hold the SONG
diskette, and returning you to your systems DOS prompt.

          Main Menu Functions:
LOAD Copies a SONG from the diskette into the computers
                    memory.

SAVE Copies the SONG in the computers memory to the
                    diskette.

CLEAR Removes the SONG from the computers memory.

DIRECTORY Specifies the SONG diskette drive and directory.

EXIT Quits the Editor & Librarian program and returns you to
                    the DOS prompt.

To select the function you want, highlight the function and press
ENTER. Note that you can not use the ESCape key to EXIT the
program. You must select the EXIT Menu option and confirm your
          selection.

                                          10

          Main Menu Operation

          1. LOAD

Loading a SONG for the first time
When you select LOAD for the first time the computer will
search for the SONG names in your current directory.

Keep in mind that your computer can create file names with
up to 8 characters for the name and another 3 for the
extension. On the other hand, the Technics keyboard puts a
number from 01 to 19 in the first two characters and the
extension portion is reserved for system use. For this
reason, your Technics keyboard and the Editor & Librarian
can only find and LOAD one song starting with the characters
               from 01 to 19.

The SONG Names it finds are displayed in high intensity
text, (brightly), while the SONG Names it does not find are
               displayed in normal text mode.

If no SONG names are found the computer will automatically
call the DIRECTORY function and ask you to specify the disk
drive and directory containing your SONG Disk. If the
DIRECTORY function is called by the LOAD function, there
must be at least one SONG on the disk specified.

To execute the LOAD function, move the highlight to the
desired SONG Name displayed in high intensity text, and
press ENTER. The computer will copy the SONG into the
computers memory and the program will proceed to the SONG
               Level Menu.

If you attempt to LOAD a SONG Name that is not displayed in
high intensity text, the computer will display a message
that the SONG does not exist (or is incomplete) and return
you to the SONG name display to select another SONG.

Loading a SONG when there is a SONG already in memory
If there is a SONG already in the computers memory when you
select LOAD the program will present a Menu of options.

EDIT AGAIN Proceed to the SONG Level Menu with the
SAME SONG in the computers memory.

SAVE SONG Calls the SAVE function retaining the option
                              to EDIT AGAIN.

NEW SONG Calls the CLEAR function, removing the SONG
from the computers memory, then calls the
                              LOAD function.

                                          11

          2. SAVE
When you select SAVE the computer will search for the SONG
               names in your current directory.

The SONG Names it finds are displayed in high intensity
text, (brightly), while the SONG Names it does not find are
               displayed in normal text mode.

               Saving a New SONG
To execute the SAVE function move the highlight to any of
the SONG Names displayed in normal text, and press ENTER.
The program will now position the cursor for you to enter or
edit the portion of the SONG Name after the numbers the
               Technics keyboard needs.

You can use any letter or number in a SONG Name and some
punctuation marks. You can not use characters such as the
               asterisk (*), space ( ) or question mark (?). The Editor &
Librarian contains a "filter" to prevent you from putting
these and other illegal characters in a SONG Name. If you
experence any difficulties with these or other characters,
               consult your DOS documentation.

When you have finished press ENTER, again. The computer
will copy the SONG from the computers memory to disk.

Saving to a SONG that already exists
If the SONG Name you selected was displayed in high
intensity text, it means that the SONG already existed on
that drive and directory. In this case the program will
               display a Menu of options.

CANCEL Return to the SONG Name display to select another
                         SONG Name.

INSERT SAVE ONLY the TONE MEMORY Locations from the SONG
in the computers memory with the SAME name as the
                         SONG on the DISK.

REPLACE SAVE the SONG in the computers memory to disk
REPLACING the SONG on the DISK.

If you select this option, the program will now
position the cursor for you to enter or edit the
text portion of the SONG Name. When you have
                         finished press ENTER, again.

Please note that the SONG on the DISK will be
                         erased.

                                          12

          3. CLEAR
When you select the CLEAR function the program will remove
the SONG from the computers memory.

               No SONG in memory
If there is no SONG in the computers memory when you select
this function the program will display the message "NO SONG
IN MEMORY" and return you to the Main Menu.

               Unedited SONG in memory
If there is a SONG in memory that has not been edited when
you select this function the message "FREEING SONG Memory"
               will appear.

               Edited SONG in memory
If the SONG in the computers memory was edited and NOT SAVED
the program will display a Menu of options.

REMOVE Erases the edited copy of the SONG from the
computers memory. Note that all of the edits to
the SONG will be lost. The original SONG on the
disk is unaffected by this operation.

RETURN Cancels the function keeping the SONG in the
computers memory and returns you to the Main Menu.

          4. DIRECTORY
This Menu function displays the current default directory
the program will search for the SONG Names. To change the
selection, type a new drive designation, or edit the
DIRECTORY shown. Press ENTER to accept the DIRECTORY as is,
or make the changes you typed.

If the drive or directory does not exist, or there is no
disk in the drive, this function will not accept your
changes. Specify an existing drive and directory, or make
sure there is a disk in the specified drive.

If this function is called by the LOAD function, there must
be at least one SONG on the disk specified.

                                          13

          5. EXIT
Selecting this Menu option returns you to your DOS system
prompt, provided any SONG that is in the computers memory is
               SAVED.

               Unsaved edited SONG in memory
If you select this function and there is an edited SONG in
the computers memory that has not been SAVED, the program
will display a Menu of options.

EXIT Exits the program abandoning the edited copy of
the SONG in the computers memory. Note that all
of the edits to the SONG will be lost. Any SONG
SAVED on the disk is unaffected by this operation.

RETURN Cancels the EXIT function keeping the edited SONG
in the computers memory and returns you to the
                         Main Menu.

                                          14

          The Edit Menu

When you reach the Edit Menu, through the LOAD or LOAD/EDIT AGAIN
Menu options, a list of the Tone Memory Locations and the
Edit Menu will appear. The functions of this menu allow you to
work with the Tone Memory Locations within the SONG you selected
to LOAD, or go to the Main or Library Menus.

          Edit Menu Functions:
EDIT Select and Edit an individual Tone Memory Location.

COPY Copy the entire contents of one Tone Memory Location
                    into another.

SWAP Exchange the entire contents of one Tone Memory
                    Location with another.

WRITE Similar to the COPY function. Duplicates your Edits of
one Tone Memory Location in another location.

FILE Takes you to the MAIN Menu.

LIBRARY Takes you to the LIBRARY Menu.

          Edit Menu Operation
          1. EDIT
When you select the EDIT function the list of Tone Memory
Locations becomes a Menu. Move the highlight in this Menu
to select the Tone Memory Location you want to EDIT, and
press ENTER. The Edit Menu will be replaced by the Edit
Screen which is detailed in another section.

If you used the ESCape key to exit an Edit Screen on which
you made changes that were not written to a Tone Memory
Location, the Editor & Librarian will present a Menu of
               options.
EDIT AGAIN Proceed to the Edit Screen without selecting
a new Tone Memory Location to EDIT with the
                              existing edits in place.
REPLACE Discard the existing edits and select a new Tone
                         Memory Location to EDIT.

NOTE: When a Tone Memory Location is selected for EDIT
it is moved to an "edit buffer". This is similar
to the actual function of the Technics keyboard.
If you select the Sound Edit function and change
the settings, you must write those changes to a
Tone Memory Location. If you do not, those
changes are lost when a new voice is selected.

                                          15

          2. COPY
The COPY function is used to copy the entire contents of one
Tone Memory Location into another. When the COPY is
selected the list of Tone Memory Locations becomes a Menu.
               A. Move the highlight to the Tone Memory Location you want
to duplicate, and press ENTER. This "tags" the
                    location for the COPY function.
               B. Now, move the highlight to the Tone Memory Location you
want to hold the duplicate, and press ENTER.
The second location is now an exact COPY of the first.

          3. SWAP
The SWAP function is used to exchange the entire contents of
one Tone Memory Location with another. When SWAP is
selected the list of Tone Memory Locations becomes a Menu.
               A. Move the highlight to the Tone Memory Location you want
to move, and press ENTER. This "tags" the location for
                    the SWAP function.
               B. Now, move the highlight to the Tone Memory Location you
want to hold the original, and press ENTER.
The contents of the second location are exchanged with the
               contents of the first.

          4. WRITE
This function is similar to the COPY function. It copies
the contents of the "edit buffer", mentioned above, to a
Tone Memory Location. When WRITE is selected the list of
Tone Memory Locations becomes a Menu. Move the highlight to
the Tone Memory Location you want to WRITE the "edit buffer"
               to, and Press ENTER.

If there are no edits in the buffer the program will display
a "No Edits..." message for about five seconds and return
               you to the Edit Menu.

                                          16

          5. FILE
Selecting this function returns you to the Main Menu. This
is useful if you want to SAVE the SONG you are presently
editing in its present form before performing additional
               edits.

If you started to perform the WRITE function and used the
ESCape key to cancel that function, the Editor & Librarian
will display a Menu of options.
QUIT This will take you back up to the Main Menu
without writing the edits to the SONG. Any SAVE
operation you perform will not include the
                         unwritten edits.

The unwritten edits, however, remain in the
"edit buffer". Use the LOAD/EDIT AGAIN options to
get back to the Edit Menu.

Then, you can use either the EDIT/EDIT AGAIN
option to continue editing or the WRITE function
to make them part of the SONG in the computers
                         memory.
RETURN Cancels the function and returns you to the
                         Edit Menu.

          6. LIBRARY
Selecting this function takes you to the Library Menu. The
list of Tone Memory Locations remains on the screen while
the Edit Menu functions are replaced by the Library Menu
functions. These functions are detailed in another section.

                                          17

          The Edit Screen

The Edit Screen presents all of the Sound Data from a Tone Memory
Location on the computer's screen at the same time. No more
searching through an endless maze of Menus and sub-pages.
Finding and adjusting the setting you want to change is now
simple. You can even use your computer's "Print Screen" function
for a "hard copy" for your files.

          The Edit Procedure

          1. Use the cursor keys to highlight the setting you want to
               adjust.

          2. Then, use the computer keyboard's "+" (plus) and "-" (minus)
keys to increment or decrement the setting, respectively.

          3. When you are finished adjusting all of the settings you want
to change, press the ENTER key.
          4. The list of Tone Memory Locations again becomes a Menu.
Highlight the Tone Memory Location in which to WRITE the
               Sound Data, and press ENTER.

          5. The Tone Memory Location Name is highlighted. To use the
same Name, press ENTER, or use your computer's keyboard to
type in a new Tone Memory Location Name, and then press
               ENTER.

The ESCAPE key can be used in all of the above steps to
"back-up" one or more steps of the procedure. The Sound
Data is not written to any Tone Memory Location until you
               press ENTER in Step #5.

                                          18

          The SX-KN800 Edit Screen

The Edit Screen is arranged in a "spreadsheet" format. The
settings are placed at the intersection of the TONE they effect
and the parameter to be adjusted. Settings that adjust
parameters for the Voice Effects are placed in the columns on the
left and right of the screen.

So, if you want to adjust the VOLUME LEVEL of TONE 2 use your
cursor control keys to place the highlight on the same ROW as
VOLUME LEVEL and the same COLUMN as "2".

The AUTO BEND & TRILL Voice Effect has many parameters that
adjust the overall Effect, and can be switched ON or OFF for each
TONE. Because the settings for PATTERN and TOUCH SENSE, and
DEPTH & SPEED, control the overall Effect, they appear in the
left most and right most columns, respectively.

As a reminder, the Voice Group, Tone Memory Location Number, and
Voice Name appear in a box in the upper left hand corner of the
          screen.

There may be times when adjusting a parameter on the screen will
not make any difference in the sound you will hear. If the
VOICE MODE, adjusted in the TONE 1 column on the first row, is
set to NORMAL, none of the adjustments made in the TONE 2 or 3
columns will be heard. This is because these Tones are not
"turned on" when the VOICE MODE is set to NORMAL.

Similarly, when a BASS Tone Memory Location is selected for
Editing, the only Voice Mode available is NORMAL. This is the
result of the voicing of the Technics Keyboard, not a limitation
of the Editor & Librarian program.

                                          19

          The SX-KN1000 Edit Screen

The Edit Screen is arranged as a "form". The parameters are
placed in groups for TONE and EFFECT settings for Pitch,
          Modulation, and Digital Effect.

Each of the TONE parameter groups are laid out the same, with
settings for TONE, ENVELOPE, VOLUME, VIBRATO, and PITCH.

The EFFECT parameter groups are arranged to accommodate the
settings for that group. For instance, the PITCH and VIBRATO
groups are arranged vertically, in the same column as the PITCH
and VIBRATO settings for each of the TONE groups. Then the
analog Effect settings are placed along side the settings for
VIBRATO, and the DIGITAL EFFECT settings above that.

The setting you select for one parameter may affect your ability
to adjust another. If you set the TONE ENVELOPE mode to
"Special", you can not adjust the DECAY and SUSTAIN of the SUB-
TONE ENVELOPE. Selecting the "Normal" TONE ENVELOPE Mode will
make those adjustments available. Similar exclusions exist for
some of the DIGITAL EFFECT parameters depending on the TYPE
          setting.

The setting you select for one parameter may change options you
have for adjusting another. For instance, depending on your
VIBRATO EFFECTS PATTERN setting, your selection for the VIBRATO
          EFFECTS PATTERN TYPE will change.

                                          20

          The SX-KN2000 Edit Screen

The Edit Screen is arranged as a "form". The TONE and EFFECT
parameters are arranged into two groups.

Each of the three TONE parameter groups are laid out the same,
with settings for TONE, LEVEL, ENVELOPE, FILTER, PITCH, and
VIBRATO. Because there are so many parameters in the TONE
section, knowing exactly which one you are adjusting can be
difficult. Therefore, the GROUP and parameter Names are also
highlighted when selected for adjustment. Of course, when you
use the "+" and "-" keys to adjust the setting, only the setting
          will change.

To change a TONE setting, use the cursor keys to move the
highlight to the First, Second, or SUB Tone you want to change.
To step through the available tones one at a time, use the "+"
and "-" keys. To select a particular Tone Group, press the
corresponding letter, "A" through "N", for that Group. This will
select the first TONE in the specified Group.

There are also three methods of setting the "Key Limit"
parameters for the LEVEL, FILTER, or ENVELOPE Groups.
          - Use the "+" or "-" keys to step through the settings one at
               a time.
          - Use a numeric key, from 0 through 8, to set the Octave of
               the note indicated.
          - Use a letter key, from "A" to "G", to set the note within
the indicated Octave. Please remember that "G 8" is the
maximum value that can be selected for these parameters. As
such, if 8 is the indicated Octave, you can not set the note
value to "A" or "B". To select a "#" sharp value, use the
               "+" or "-" key.

The EFFECT parameter groups are arranged to accommodate the
settings for that group. The EFFECT groups contain the settings
for: OCTAVE, DISTORTION, VIBRATO, REVERB, EFFECTS, and
          CONTROLLERS.

The setting you select for one parameter may affect your ability
to adjust another. For instance, in the Analog EFFECTS Group,
selecting AUTO Bend or Trill, will change the Patterns available
to you. Similarly, in the DIGITAL EFFECTS Group, your selection
of an effect Type may change the number of parameters, their
names and their settings. This emulates the operation of the
keyboard and does not place any additional limits on your ability
to create sounds for your keyboard.

          The Library Menu

When you select the LIBRARY function of the Edit Menu the Editor
& Librarian program takes you to the Library Menu. The list of
Tone Memory Locations remains on the screen while the Edit Menu
is replaced by the Library Menu.

          Library Menu Functions
IMPORT The IMPORT function is used to select a Tone Memory
stored in a Library File for use in the SONG in the
                    computers memory.
EXPORT Takes you to the Export Menu, where you CREATE a new
Library File, or APPEND (add to) an existing Library
File a Tone Memory Location from the SONG in the
                    computers memory.
DIRECTORY Specifies the LIBRARY disk drive and directory.
EDIT Takes you back to the Edit Menu.

          Library Menu Operations
          1. IMPORT
The IMPORT function is used to select a Tone Memory stored
in a Library File for use in the SONG in the computers
               memory.
               A. Select the Library File you want to use.

The first step in the IMPORT process is to specify the
Library File you want to use.

When you select the IMPORT function a list of the
Library Files available in the specified sub-directory
appears on the screen. Highlight the Library File you
want using the cursor keys, and press ENTER.

If the screen is full and you do not see the name of
the Library File you want, use the PgUp and PgDn keys
to display file names that do not fit on the screen.

If there are no Library Files on the specified drive or
sub-directory, the DIRECTORY function is called. Edit
the directory specification, and press ENTER.

Tone Memory Location Data is not compatible across all
Technics Keyboards. Therefore, the program must check
the Library File to make sure it contains compatible
                    Tone Memory Data.

When the Library File data is verified, the contents
are displayed on the screen, and it is time to proceed
                    to the next step.

                                          22

               B. Selecting a Tone Memory Location for IMPORT

The next step of the IMPORT process is to select the
individual Tone Memory Location you want for the SONG
                    in the computers memory.

The Tone Memory Library Screen contains a list of the
name and a one line description of the Tone Memory
Locations in the Library File. Highlight the Tone
Memory Location you want, and press ENTER.

If there is not enough room on the screen to display
all of the Tone Memory Locations in the selected
Library File, a Menu of options will appear.

                    Tone Memory Library Menu Operation
UP Scrolls the display of Tone Memory Locations
one screen closer to the beginning of the
                              Library File.
DOWN Scrolls the display of Tone Memory Locations
one screen closer to the end of the Library
                              File.
SELECT Moves the highlight from this Menu to the
list of Tone Memory Locations on the screen,
                              for selection.
RETURN Takes you back to the Library Menu.

NOTE: A message, instructing you that you are
ALREADY AT the TOP or BOTTOM of the Library
File, when you select UP or DOWN, if there
are no additional screens closer to the
beginning or end of the Library File,
                              respectively.

When you press ENTER, the Tone Memory Library Display
is replaced by the list of Tone Memory Locations from
the SONG in the computers memory.

               C. Select a Tone Memory Location

The highlight is now placed in the list of Tone Memory
Locations. Move the highlight to the Tone Memory
Location you want to hold the Tone Memory from the
                    Library File, and press ENTER.

The Tone Memory from the Library File replaces the Tone
                    Memory in the computers memory.

                                          23

          2. EXPORT
The EXPORT function is used to select a Tone Memory
Location, from the SONG in the computers memory, and use it
to CREATE, or APPEND (add to), a Library File.

When you select EXPORT, the Library Menu is replaced by the
               Export Menu.

               A. Select Export Mode
                    Export Menu Operations
CREATE Use a Tone Memory Location from the SONG in
the computers memory to start a new Library
                              File.
APPEND Add a Tone Memory Location from the SONG in
the computers memory to an existing Library
                              File.
QUIT Takes you back to the Library Menu.

                    CREATE
If you want to CREATE a Library File, the program will
prompt you to input a Name for the file. The Name will
be created on the drive and in the sub-directory
                    specified in the DIRECTORY function.

Input up to eight characters for the Library File Name.
You can use any letter or number in a Library File Name
and some punctuation marks. You can not use characters
such as the asterisk (*), space ( ) or question
mark (?). The Editor & Librarian contains a "filter"
to prevent you from putting these and other illegal
characters in a Library File Name. If you experience
any difficulties with these or other characters,
                    consult your DOS documentation.

The Editor & Librarian will prompt you to re-enter the
Library File Name if the it already exists on the
specified drive and sub-directory. At this point you
can re-specify the name or press ESCape to exit the
CREATE process and re-specify the DIRECTORY.

When the Library File Name is accepted, the highlight
will be placed into the list of Tone Memory Locations,
and you can proceed to the next step.

                                          24

                    APPEND
If you select the APPEND function, the list of Tone
Memory Locations is replaced by a Menu of the Library
Files on the specified drive and sub-directory.
Highlight the Library File you want using the cursor
                    keys, and press ENTER.

When the Library File data is verified it is time to
                    proceed to the next step.

               B. Select the Tone Memory Location to EXPORT
Once you have selected the EXPORT Mode, the Editor &
Librarian will display the Library File Name at the
                    bottom of the screen.

The list of Tone Memory Locations is placed at the top
of the screen. Move the highlight to the Tone Memory
Location you want to EXPORT, and press ENTER. The
program displays the Name of the Tone Memory Location
selected for EXPORT, and prompts you to enter a text
description. The description is limited to
approximately 56 characters in length. When you have
finished entering the text to be stored with the Tone
Memory in the Library File, press ENTER.

The Tone Memory is now Exported to the selected Library
                    File.

               C. Menu for EXPORT additional Tone Memory Locations to the
                    SAME Library File
                    Continue Export Menu Operation
SELECT Takes you back to the EXPORT Menu
APPEND Places the highlight in the list of Tone
Memory Locations for EXPORT to the selected
                              Library File.
QUIT Takes you back to the LIBRARY Menu.

                                          25

          3. DIRECTORY
This Menu function displays the current default directory
the program will search for the Library File Names. To
change the selection, type a new drive designation, or edit
the DIRECTORY shown. Press ENTER to accept the DIRECTORY as
is, or make the changes you typed.

If the drive or directory does not exist, or there is no
disk in the drive, this function will not accept your
changes. Specify an existing drive and directory, or make
sure there is a disk in the specified drive.

If this function is called by the IMPORT or EXPORT / APPEND
function, there must be at least one Library File on the
               disk specified.

          4. EDIT
This function takes you back to the Edit Menu.

All of the Library Files are closed.

The DIRECTORY specification is retained for Library Menu
               functions.
