You may know the tune but probably not the song.

Hi Terry:

"Ghost Riders in the Sky" was the name of a Popular Song over here in the US during the 50's and 50's as I recall. Same melody! Done by a big name artist at the time but I'll have to look it up. Isn't it still under copyright protection? Does this pass muster as a "parody?"

After checking a fairly reliable source... this song has a very strange history... and the melody almost matches, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home."

Ghost Riders was written by Stan Jones (no, not my golfing friend in Texarkana so many years ago) and was recorded by about a half dozen or more talents of that era. Vaughan Monroe was popular with my peers but Burl Ives, Johnny Cash and others did it justice.

I'd love to have been a fly on the wall listening to the negotiations that went on to skirt or recognize copyright, big egos and the odds of it becoming a "hit."

Many years ago, when I was still playing a lot of country/western songs, I recorded this rendition of Ghost Riders In The Sky

The style used was an onboard style of the PSR-2000 and it was recorded with a Zoom H2 recorder purchased from DonM many years ago.

Thanks, Gary:

I saved that one to my little "treasure trove" of Arranger Performers. Great style to work with and accompany that unique vocal of yours. Enjoyed. ----Dave

Thanks Dave. Unfortunately, my lung condition is such that I find it very difficult to talk on the telephone, let alone sing.

All the best,

Gary, Great job with that, that tune suits you. smile.

I remember watching a Ray Manzarek video where he told how that tune influenced the writing of “Riders on The Storm.”
