technics kn7000 to tyros 2 - 11/28/07 12:24 PM

Hi ! I am to use the tyros 2 instead of my technics kn7000 for performances next year. I have many songs that I have sequenced and saved to my 1 gig s/d card. Is there any way I could transfer to the tyros 2 and play the songs ? Thank you. Roger B

Hi Roger , I also have a Kn7000 and a T2 .
It goes without saying that both brands are first class and that the T2 has many fine improvements .
The great disappointment for me is that it is not possible to easily convert the "Great Technic Song specific Styles " and i have lots of them, over to the Yamaha T2 format ...the result is very poor !!! and certainly not good enough to play on my gigs .
That is why I've had the T2 for over a year and never done a gig with the instrument .

Hi Roger,
unfortunately they're really not compatible.
Drums & sounds differ , the editing would be a nightmare.

The only way you'd get a Technics song to play back 100% acurately would be if you recorded the songs as mp3's.

best wishes

Is it not possible to save the Technics sequence as an SMF file (on the KN7000)? My understanding is that then could be read by the PSR/Tyros family of keyboards as a midi file. Not sure as I haven't done this, though I too do have the Tyros 2 and KN7000.

Hi Keith,
you're correct. A Technics song file can be converted to midifile format, but it would still need a fair bit of tweaking. I can't remember the process as it's been a few years since I last tried it, but from memory, the converted song possibly didn't even sound the same played back on a Technics, once the conversion to midifile format was done.

As far as playing it back on a T2, individual drum velocities could well be incorrect, & you'd probably have to change volumes & maybe even sounds on the other tracks etc

I used to do a bit of midifile to style conversion between my Technics & PSR.
It's certainly not as bad as trying to convert a Technics style to Yamaha format, but still not hassle free. It would be an awful lot of work doing a large number of them.

best wishes
Rikki

Thank you all for your advice. It seems a shame that it is not possible to convert my sequenced songs on my 3 1 gb sd cards. I love the suggestion from Giovanni to use the Tyros 2 for home use only. I think that is what I will do for the time being. I paid only £1650 for the keyboard only, seems the price is now very reasonable. Roger B. Best wishes to you all for Christmas and the approaching New Year.

Hi Roger,
if you really have some songs that you luv on your Technics, try recording them as an mp3. THe Kn7 actually came with software to do this.
I still regret not having recorded some of the songs ( as mp3's) I'd put together as backing tracks , I could have still used them to play along to.

best wishes
Rikki

I have made the change from a KN7000 to a Tyros 2 and now a S900. With the almost unlimited Yamaha styles available why try to convert Technics styles. I have been making changes in the Yamaha styles -- Instruments, volumes, effects and the results are rewarding.

Let go of your KN7000 thinking and you will find many great styles in the Tyros 2. Both keyboards have great features – find the ones in Yamaha and you will take the keyboard on a job. I grant you this, the change over is a nightmare – I am glad I did it, it has opened a new world of thinking and creating for me.

Hi,

I used to have the Tyros 1/2. I want to try out the Technics KN-7000. What is your take on the Technics KN-7000 vs. the Tyros 1 or 2. Thanks in advance.

Hi John , I'm very interested when you say an almost unlimited range of Yamaha styles available ????

I would be delighted if you could point me in the right direction !!

Whilst it goes without saying the Yamaha styles are good , I've not come across any that are "style specific"

I.e Glenn Miller hits (with all the proper intros and endings )

New York New York

You don't have to say you love me (dusty springfield hit )

Land of hope and Glory (last night of the proms )

Dambuster march (with explosion sound effects )

Just a few examples ......I never wanted our expected my T2 to sound like my Kn7000
but I certainly thought that Yamaha would have had song specific styles available to purchase !!!

Regards to you all ..........Giovanni

Chris, What the SD card is to your Kn7000 a memory stick (Thumb drive) is to a Tyros 2. It does the same job and much better. Instead of transporting your file on a limited floppy disk from the computer you use a memory stick. Yes, it will store audio files.

Giovanni, Try this site – be prepared to receive hundreds of styles. Not all good and some fantastic. This site will give you all the information you need on just about every subject.
The Kn7000 is a fine keyboard for big band music. The Tyros2 plays big band with a contemporary flavor – more push and drive. I use the registrations to achieve what I want from the styles, cut some of the instruments and adjust volumes to my taste, and I select and adjust the right hand instruments.

Chris, I think I may be mistaken about storing the audio files directly to the memory stick, I have the S900 which can store the audio directly to a memory stick. Sorry.

Some very interesting readings on this subject!!... i have DECIDED that the Tyros 2 is going to be my next investment second keyboard along with my Kn7000 which i still will use at the moment until i find my way around this wonderful instrument... The Tyros 3 i will wait and see what the prices and advantages this has against the T2. Chris.
