SD7 test recording

SD7 test recording - 03/26/20 04:05 PM

(tap, tap) ... is this thing on? keys

Sorry - no box account, but here's a quick trial with a style I like a lot - Folk 12-8. The harmonies are hard to balance without a footswitch, so I just pushed the slider all the way up - not a good way to get the right blend, but they sound pretty good for day2, right? Still planning on doing a "live" very soon. Maybe tomorrow.

Enjoy!

After a second listen, I hear lots that I'd like to change ... mostly balance and EQ, but my first impression is optimistic. I also wish I knew what chords were in the ending pattern before I hit the button. Kinda pulled the rug out of my last few notes. LOL

Great song, Dave. The keyboard's definitely a keeper. Pay no attention to the fat guy from central New Jersey. wink

Nicely done.

Quick observation ... sounds like mic is just about to clip (especially when harmonizer kicks in). I would....

* Drop mic input gain at back by about -1 - 2db

That should do it :-)

Yes I started to mention that. It's very sensitive.

Re: SD7 test recording - 03/26/20 09:05 PM

Thanks - All good points .... the balance is no where near optimal, and I have not even begun to tweak the vocalizer. The 2 times you heard it were the first 2 times I tried it. I will fuss with that in the days ahead. Those songs were not even recorded with a sustain pedal, and that makes me very uneasy. It's an un natural feeling. Today I set up my EZ-8 patterns in registrations (turned out to be more like EZ16 or so) and I picked, and modified my 8 go to sounds. This makes the unit almost ready for the stage.
I need to decide if I want to spring for the Ketron dedicated pedal unit, or try to make due with the soft button on the screen. (You can assign a tab to turn the Vocals on and off)
I've had it two days now, and I think I'm about to send the jury home. Anyone want to sell me a case (shorter than 50") and a 6 button pedal?

Are you SURE that fits? Specs show the int dimensions at 43". The kb is 46".

Re: SD7 test recording - 03/27/20 12:23 AM

Sorry, my mistake. It is a GKB 76. I bought it when I had the SD7 last time and used only a few times. It fits.

Yup. That one is 50 or so inches long. I’ll call you tomorrow (Fri)

Re: SD7 test recording - 03/27/20 03:24 AM

Uncle Dave,

For what it is worth, on the first song you clearly needed some more EQ in the highs. sounds very good in She's no lady, but why not give the drums a bit more prominence ? (they are no yamaha drums, you don't have to hide them :))
Your vocals, excellent as they are, are slightly too prominent to my ears in relation to the accompaniment and the same goes for the organ sound. Beef up the bass and drums and occasional let thru some of the acc. tracks.
Just my view mind you......

regards
John

P.S. I noticed in the live streams the same slight disbalance , at least in my ears, between the keyboard arrangments and your voice, where the latter lays firmly on top of the music and could be slightly more in the music imho.......

Re: SD7 test recording - 03/27/20 04:12 AM

John , some good points.
I have always noticed the better singers have a balance more towards the vocals. I too think a more balance with instruments will make it sound more live. I also agree with using the strength of Ketron..Let us hear drums and bass.
This is also a weakness with great singers. Both Dave and Donny (great singers) do this

I will say sometimes the opposite is true too..A better player than singer will bury the voice too much..

Every time I watch a good jazz group, even with average vocals, the bass will stand out.. It is the drive in the group.

You've heard the professional, here is the amateur:

Note: just recorded it off the cuff and have never recorded simultaneously vocals and keyboard on the SD7 so far. It is kind of tricky to get the balance correct, as I also stated in my comments on UD.

Re: SD7 test recording - 03/27/20 08:51 AM

I agree with all of these comments. My vocals are definitely too loud in these mixes, but I was listening to them critically to get friendly with the processor. As to my regular "vocally dominant" mix when performing .... it's like a well endowed woman wearing a low cut blouse - you gotta use what you got, right? LOL

Don, I found a smaller case (by a teeny bit, but I'm fussy about size), so I'll pass on the Gator. Thanks anyway!
