I don't think there are many song writers here, Donny ...

I would assume when you play an arranger keyboard you are composing songs don't you agree?

Not a song writer, but I did a lot of recording with technics. I am not sure why, but I recorded 10x more songs with my Psr2100, and Tyros III, then I did with the three korgs I had.

Donny, a very interesting video, thanks. I understood everything until the last section. I would be interested in watching an in-depth on the last section, working computer and keyboard.

And, no, I don't agree that I am composing a song when playing an arranger KB, because I am playing a song someone else composed ... Even if I am taking an ad-lib solo, I am using the composer's song as my basis ... JMHO

I have some original songs that I composed and wrote, with the help of the arranger. Now I'm bummed that they aren't original songs.

Hi Donny and fellow responders:

You have at least two song-writers who frequent this part of the "Zone." I do the best I can with the "instrument available to me"... the 970 but am increasingly frustrated with the complexity of Vocal Harmony and Vocal Effects. Then, when combined with creeping old age and poor health, it's difficult to spend much time here and at other sites I used to frequent quite often. Many of the real good song-writer's sites have hung up their spurs.

Tony, the Intro and Outro of styles do not "make up the composition" of the song," IMHO... but granted, they have the capability to influence things. As I see it, without the arranger, I would be stuck with a single instrument song and unless I possessed immense talents on both the instrument and my vocal (not to mention fantastic melody and lyric creativity)... I would not stand a ghost of a chance in getting the gist of what my song(s) are attempting to achieve.

All that considered, the worst pitfall in writing today... newbies seem to come out of the woodwork in droves wanting to be songwriters. Most are only lyricists looking for co-writes with composers. Without real support from insiders with clout, the odds of success are downright pitiful. Most of us consider it a hobby... even though many of us work at it as though it is our "Day Job."

Tend to think if you have written an “original “ song, shouldn’t make any difference if it was written on an arranger keyboard, piano , guitar whatever.

No doubt in my mind that Zuki has written an original song even if an Arranger was used. Chords and notes in the "body" of the song must be played and the Intro and Outro are like "icing on the cake"... especially if they are striking musically and lend credence to the genre of the song. Don't forget, the voices/instruments selected for the song's style can really make a difference.

Nearly every song I've written began with an idea, led me to a notebook to write down the story-line and to later, fill in the chords for each verse, chorus or other elements of the song. Style selection is a bit like an Easter-Egg hunt and I do my best to find ways to not use styles used on earlier songs. If that isn't an option, I modify the style to suit the song... or resort to using a minor key theme for the work... if that is appropriate.

If money grew on trees... I would hire a demo house to do every one of my songs... but being broke and sitting on the side of the street with a tin cup is not what I'm seeking... LOL!

If you are using intro 2, for example, on the 3X, you are arranging your own chords and ideas, etc. What's the difference in writing an original score and hiring a string section to fill in....same thing, imo.

I wrote a song called Soldier Boy. It was inspired by watching our son's boot camp ceremony at Paris Island (a while back). In the stands that day, my wife wrote the lyrics and I later put together the score.

I put in on garage band (for kicks) and it started out way in the 1000s and made the top 100 in play - it kept moving up.

I wrote the entire score and used my PSR3000 and a Roland style.
Maybe some day I'll put it up here, but that's a tall order with this group

Below are the posts relative to what I believe has led to a misunderstanding of what I was trying to say:



As Rikki correctly surmised, Uncle Dave and I were answering Donny's question about 'composing' when playing an Arranger Keyboard ... If I'm playing "Misty" as a Bossa Nova, I'm not composing a song, but as UD said, I'm arranging someone else's composition ...
However, if I am using a style, multi pads, voices, whatever on an Arranger Keyboard to COMPOSE a song of MY OWN, then I am composing an original song ... So to those of you who have done so (including myself), fear not, YOUR songs are still original compositions ...
It certainly is not my intention to impugn the creative genius or reputation of anyone who writes his/her own music/lyrics regardless of what medium they are using to do so.

My apologies for any misleading statements and also for taking this thread further SOUTH !!!

Here you go, zuki. Here's an original of mine called I Found Love. Keyboard is my old Korg i30 in Style Play with a style called Tikitikita (I think). It's a one take keyboard track and a one take vocal track. I added a bit of reverb to the vocal.

Sure,and the local operator before dialing came in. I am really old.

My aunt was the operator. My mother worked at the bank; her number was 9. Ours was 370J. When we finally got a private line they dropped the J.
I can remember picking up the phone and saying "number nine please" and Aunt Mary said "Donny, your mom isn't there, she is at the post office." Incidentally the post office number was 1.
I'm still "Donny" in Oklahoma.

Any song I have written - there's only a few - have been about personal experiences ... The first was about that first heartbreak (age 16 yrs ) then they mostly had to do with my girlfriend/wife, and being written mostly in the early 60s, are of that genre - pretty much what I call 'bubblegum' songs, nothing in depth musically or lyrically ... I've never been able to just pick a subject and write about it - Mac Davis I'm NOT ...
