Quandry and Critical Problem Genos

Quandry and Critical Problem Genos - 12/19/19 11:52 AM

Ok I've got my biggest Christmas gig of the year coming up tomorrow Friday the 20th. I just shipped my SX900 to Florida, I thought I'd run thru some of the Christmas tunes for tomorrow's 2 hour gig. YIKES my Genos will not recognized the user area where I had registrations stored for both Christmas and non Christmas gigs. Since I cannot access the user area I cannot access the USB drives either where I have back up stored.

Any suggestions?

If I can't solve this the Pa4x I hope will come to the rescue.

Hi Stephen,
Do you have more info you can give us?
What have you done so far?
Can you access user area without inserting the USB stick?
If no it would be the KB if yes it would be the stick etc.
Screen shots also help.

Re: Quandry and Critical Problem Genos - 12/19/19 12:06 PM

You can only access Registrations in User from the Registration menu. If a different menu is open, you won't see Registrations, only what that menu calls for. You probably know this but it's easy to overlook.
Press both Registration Buttons at the same time and then hit up arrows til you get to where you can select User.
It's the only thing I can think of.

Re: Quandry and Critical Problem Genos - 12/19/19 12:09 PM

Eric,

1.I did a keyboard reset.
2.I recalibrated the touch screen
3.The user area with or without the USB stick cannot be accessed. 4.My first thought was it was the USB stick but I tried others and they show a USB stick is present with the amount of space on it
5. tried the usb sticks in my Mac and all the files are appearing when at the computer.

Re: Quandry and Critical Problem Genos - 12/19/19 12:17 PM

Don,

Thanks for the input but I tried what you suggested, that's not the problem. Looks like it could be a problem with the touch screen? When I touch the part of the screen that reads "user" it just blinks but stays on the preset settings. With that said I cannot access my custom styles. The weird part I've saved a few as favorites and I can access those.

I'm going right to work on updating Songbook on my Pa4x with a Christmas set list. I can't depend on the Genos tomorrow.

What's weird is I usually play the Genos everyday and used it on a gig a couple of days ago and there wasn't a problem.

Re: Quandry and Critical Problem Genos - 12/19/19 12:27 PM

Did you add any files since it last worked OK??

Re: Quandry and Critical Problem Genos - 12/19/19 12:27 PM

Can you hook it to a PC? If you can see the USER drive that way, you can copy it to a USB drive to get you by temporarily.

Re: Quandry and Critical Problem Genos - 12/19/19 12:53 PM

I just called Frankieve, he asked the same question Lee asked. No I did not add any user files recently. Yes I can can connect it to a PC, great idea Don.

I'm going to call Yamaha tech support but in the meantime I'll finish getting the 4x ready for tomorrow.

You recalibrate touchscreen and now screen blinks certain times.
Could this be related?
Good luck.

Use the sx900? Shoudn't all your genos song info load right into that one?

Geez Steve....
A nerve-racking experience...I've had similar experiences maybe twice....both saved by having a backup KB. Even if you get the Genos working, I'd pack the pa4x as insurance.
Best of luck

Bill,

Thank you!

My gigs pay what most of the others get here playing assisted living facilities. Ironically it was my previous non-music related employment that helped.

The good news is I had used the pa4x for a couple of years exclusively before Genos, so my Songbook there is configured for a Christmas. I'm at the Pa4x now just rechecking my settings since I last used the 4x Christmas 2016.

Chuck, I re-calibrated the screen after I discovered I could not access the user drive. One of the PSR forum members mentioned there is an SSD in the Genos, he thought maybe it failed. I think he could be on to something with that thought.

Did you try hooking to the PC? You can use a to host cable. Hold Playlist button down while powering on, and that will put it in storage mode. Then you can see everything from the PC. If you can see the User drive, then at least the information is still there.

Re: Quandry and Critical Problem Genos - 12/19/19 03:50 PM

Per the Genos Service Manual, internal memory (That would be the User Area.) is a Toshiba 64GByte eMMC device (THGBMGG9T4LBAIR). eMMC stands for embedded Multi Media Card. It's what a lot of the Chromebook type devices use in place of hard drives. That's not quite the same as an SSD, but it is still solid state storage and subject to the same type of catastrophic failure.

Looks like the PA4X is probably your best bet, Steve. Wishing you all the best - whatever you do ! ! !

Don, I wasn’t ignoring you. I started checking over things on my Pa4x I got carried away playing and doing a few tweaks, that’s the baby that will be coming with me to the gig.

Meanwhile a few minutes ago I hooked it up to my PC, although it shows the drive as being there it is empty and it wasn’t empty I had files stored there they should be there. That seems to say the built in drive on the Genos is gone. I’ve got that user drive backed up on 2 other USB drives just in case something like this happened.

Thanks for the support Tony. I had recently considered selling the Pa4x but I thought it’s too nice a board to sell..............now I know I made the right choice.

Donny, No inserting a USB into the Genos I still get the same results, when I hit the user function on the touch screen it just blinks and remains in the preset section. It does this for styles, voices and registrations.

Steve that sux.....
looks like factory service or replacement is in order here...
sorry to hear this it's a PITA

Re: Quandry and Critical Problem Genos - 12/19/19 04:29 PM

HA!!!!!!!

dance

I thought the drive is showing when hooked to a PC but it did not show any contents. I figured I’m screwed anyway and the Genos may have to have factory service so I went to the utility screen/storage and chose to format the USER drive and like magic when I rebooted the Genos I’m now able to get the the USER drive and to the USB drives where I have files/registrations/playlists backed up. I was never a gambling man, so I’m not going to gamble with the Genos on the gig tomorrow. PA4x is in place and ready to do the job.

It is really nice how members of the forum can come to the aid of a member in distress, even a panic situation. I am sure happy that Steve, at least for now, has returned to normal. Yes, the trusty Pa4X was right there, but I can only imagine how Steve felt about his new Genos. I hope it is nothing serious going forward.

I am happy for you Steve.

I'm glad you asked I was about to write a follow up. This was a 2 hour Christmas music only gig, it's an open house at an assisted living center. There's a room with a buffet near where I play seems this year more people jammed the lobby to listen to the music, standing room only. Could it be the power of the Pa4x? ha ha Nice affair I'm set up in front of the fire place in the lobby, nice place to be when it's only 20 degrees outside. Everyone had a great time singing along with Christmas Carols a real live looking Santa was there too. The Pa4x saved the day keys

Ed, I posted my problem at the PSR forum and a user posted the following:

I had after the V2 update the same problem , there was maybe a corrupt file on the user drive
After Formatting and a total reset i loaded only the styles and files i knew they are not corrupt.

this was the procedure Yamaha mailed to me :

In this case, if no clear cause is recognizable for the problems you described, it may be useful to:
- First make a backup of your setups.
- Fully initialize the Genos.
- Re-arrange the Setup completely.

That is a bit more work, but sometimes, because content from 3rd party providers is on the Genos, paths can no longer function correctly after installing a major update.

For the reset (you lose all user data, hence a backup is useful): keep a Cis-Dur chord pressed (Cis, F and Gis) when switching on, in the 2nd octave from the left.

When the word "Test" appears on the Display, you can release.

Now press 2x the [Tempo -] button (Factory Set) and then 2x the [Start / Stop] button.

Now press the [Tempo +] button (Test Exit) 1x and then [Start / Stop] again.
Wait until the Genos has completely booted.

After this i filled up the User drive with my files on the right places with Music soft downloader program (song-song/ sty-sty etc etc)

And all works now as it should be

Thank you Tony I appreciate it. Yea not a bad way to end my gig schedule with a trip to the sunny south. Seems like there was going to be plenty of time to meet up again to have lunch at Mike's Kitchen then the days started flying by. We'll keep in touch and when I'm back in town possibly in late February I'll let you know.

Likewise I wish you Lydia and your family a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Glad you were able to sort things out, Steve. Wish I could have helped, but I do not have a Genos here to work with, so I would have been working with some T2 knowledge, which, ironically, would have solved your problem.

Good luck, head south to the sunny west coast of Florida, and enjoy those 75 degree winter temperatures,
