" In my Room " song by Brian Wilson - 11/25/19 06:48 AM

A couple of weeks ago I was experimenting with the TC helicon vocaliser on my PA1000. One of the songs I intend to record should I manage to get enough songs to compile a new CD would be this old Beachboys song written and composed by the inimitable Brian Wilson...Note that this is just a trial run and I am going to record it again. Suggestions on how to improve on it are of course always welcome!

regards,
John

Wow John - great performance of a great song! I have never heard that song before and it was a joy to listen to! I so envy those of you who can vocalize - and you did a very commendable job on this song. The TC Helicon sounded like it tracked your lead very well. Thanks for sharing and share more please!

Great tune, and I look forward to hearing the final product .
I’m sure there are others here who can give you better advice on the VH, but initially I thought it could be used more sparsely. I know The Beach Boys harmonized most or all of that song, but no need to try to recreate what they did. For me, the VH effect is best used very sparsely. If it’s used to much it sounds too much like a gimmick or fake. You have avwonderful voice and sensitive interpretation. Too much VH effect can take away from your interpretation Just my thoughts . Thanks for sharing and good luck!

Great job. My only suggestion would be that since you are looking to make a CD you might consider singing the harmony seperately yourself. More work, but it would make for a better end result.

I agree, you’re a very good singer, why not harmonize yourself?

I agree with Paul. Great job, John. I remember this song quite well, but never tried to tackle it.

Cheers,

John, if I may - not sure how you 'triggered' the harmony, but you might want to try to record the harmony seperately using right hand chords to get more nuances in the harmony ... also, as was suggested, perhaps drop the harmony in some places, even if only on the line "in my room" ...
Looking forward to the finished product ...

thank you guys for your comments and suggestions.
I am well aware of the fact that the harmonies were overdone, I guess that was the whole idea. As to the suggestions of singing my own harmonies, I have never managed to do that properly also due to the fact that I have a very limited vocal range.I might give it a try one day but for the foreseeable future I will concentrate on appropriate use of the TC Helicon. Apart from the singing here I will also have to concentrate on the accompaniment.According to my missus the strings are too synthetic bu personally I like them. Be it that the righthand volume at times is clearly too loud. I also like doing this song ( and another one " Factory " - Bruce Springsteen) with this kind of arrangement, that is no drums. Perhaps I should have a walking bass though.....
When playing the guitar I only use the Vocal Harmony stompbox and I think I have managed to keep it down to very modest levels as you could hear in the guitar bit.

Anyhow thanks again for all your well meant suggestions !!

Nice job and a great song. My 2cents says back off the Harmonies a bit and EQ your lead vocal some more. Very challenging project to tackle a Beach Boys tune. Keep at it. So far so good.
BTW a while ago someone posted a track of a BBs song with just the vocals. I always liked them but it made me realize how tremendous they really were.

I often quarrel with some good friends of mine when stating that Brian Wilson is on par with folks like Lennon and McCartney.
As a matter of interest he wrote some of his best stuff this century just check out e.g. THAT LUCKY OLD SUN album. I have both the album and the studio video registration. It is a theme album in the trend of Sergeant Peppers and shows both his creativeness and genius. You can still find it on Amazon, recommended !!!
