Sx900 + Good Bye - 10/16/19 05:35 AM

Watching many of these YT Sx900 videos all I could hear was my 30 year old casio arranger....I hope this isn't the norm and with EQ/Comp the overall sound can be adjusted accordingly like previous S models.

Maybe it's the player and not because of the keyboard? confused2

I am just being honest after listening & watching THIS video....
I've had enough S models to know I can dig into the EQ/comp settings and make it sound the way I need to, .....
I never use any kb with OOTB factory settings...
I knew this would ruffle some feathers but it can also be a wake-up call and eye opener too. You have to dig into the OS and create the sound YOU need. I would like to hear what other SX900 users have done to improve the OOTB sound?

All this proves is that you can set up the SX900 to sound like a 30 year old Casio . . . if you want to. And I guess the guy in the video wanted to.

Re: Sx900 sounds like a Casio? - 10/16/19 08:04 AM

Keep in mind that 35 years ago, arranger keyboards were in their infancy and Casio pretty much had the market cornered. While their individual sounds/voices were just awful, their style files were pretty darned good. It only took a year or two before Yamaha, Korg and Roland jumped into the market and Casio rapidly took a back seat to more realistic sounding sounds/voices produced by other manufacturers. To my knowledge, Yamaha is the only manufacturer that also produces other instruments, and seems to have cornered a lot of those markets.

Re: Sx900 sounds like a Casio? - 10/16/19 08:32 AM

I think the reason why you hear resemblance between this video and old Casio’s is that this particular style of music does involve similar short patterns of a rhythm, simple fills, monophonic lead voice and funny attitude. I had Casio MA-120 and that keyboard was indeed good for this way of playing. But it is just a specific kind of music. It is in fact well played and voices are just fine, including drums.

But I must say that when it comes to demos I am myself very influenced by the music itself, so in case when I don’t like some playing or some tune I may subconsciously decide that I just don’t like the sound - well, music is an influential thing, otherwise what would be a point of it.

John my hearing is excellent,.....except for the Martin Marris studio produced Sx900 demos and a few other top stores, etc, most others fall short sound wise, but there are many reasons for that...
I hope to hear some good things once the Sx900 arrives in the states and SZers can review honestly what they think...take care

It's not that you change your mind ... it's HOW you do it. You start with a zillion videos, then tell everyone how this is the BEST thing FOR YOU ever. You sing the praises like it's the end-all instrument ... till you get bored. If you ask me, you're lousy at retirement. You have too much time to think. No one cares if you buy, trade and sell all your gear. It's how you cry wolf every single time. Just relax, my friend ... you don't have to sty up on the latest thing anymore. Your crowds were never disappointed with whatever you brought on stage. Now that you're playing at home ... just enjoy the plethora of sounds available on the PC, and trigger them with any old thing that you like ... just don't try to sell us all on how much you love it. We don't believe you.

There are times when you will only hear the (sometimes painful) truth from someone who actually CARES for you and is genuinely concerned for your well-being. Enablers are not always your friend. A friend is someone who, upon seeing a pattern of potentially destructive behavior, cares enough to risk a fracture in the relationship and speak up. I think Dave's observations and attempt at intervention is on point and, given the history between the two of you, well-intentioned. If you think he's off-base, then fine, thank him for his concern and move on. Sharing his feelings honestly doesn't make him less of a friend. JMO. AND, if all you want IS that 'perfect' keyboard, let me know when you find it; I'll buy one too smile. Wishing you only the best.

Come on Donny. You have too many friends to bail out. Sometimes, well intended razzing is taken too seriously, or given without thought of a personal affront. You have known us for over twenty years, in some cases.

You are one of my best forum buddies and I don't want you to leave.

Changing a routine (retirement in this case) is difficult. I keep playing because the consecutive days at home become awful lonely.

Donny, at least play a few times a month and enjoy your different keyboards (who cares what it is). You are a master singer and player and the folks deserve to hear you (even if you're in a funk).

p.s. You helped me in to this business, always grateful for.

You are an entertainer. I am a musician. We both appreciate the other. and your commitment to family and friends is something to be greatly admired.

I will ALWAYS be glad to hear from you...privately, if that is what you would be comfortable with.

Re: Sx900 sounds like a Casio? - 10/22/19 01:54 PM

I apologize to almost all of the members but at this time certain people have led me into a dark place regarding my postings
"Et tu, Brute". I have limited my interactions to mostly PM replies partially for now, and even in some instances they have gotten lost in the mix somehow after writing lengthy messages also which I cannot retrieve or remember most of what I wrote to them. That said the hurtfulness of those posts a few days from people I thought were friends has also dampened my enthusiasm leaving a bad taste in my mouth of receiving the New Sx900 tomorrow also. I simply am disheartened and need time to reconsider my thoughts. Friendship means a lot to me and when it is broken it digs deep. For now good luck and much excitement to ALL who receive the SX900/SX700 this week as they have shipped nationwide now. I expect to see many many demo videos about it and an assortment of pros & cons from new owners. I really do appreciate all the PM exchanges it is very humbling to speak with so many people worldwide. Maybe in time I will feel differently, but for now I will lurk behind the curtains. Your Yamaha SX900 Christmas morning starts tomorrow,
open your boxes and enjoy your musical presents.

Thank you for now.

Donny, I never meant to hurt your feelings. Truly. We razz, and we tease all the time, and if I took it too far ... I'm sorry.
My remarks about your posting "style" are all observations that many agree with. Other than my few pet peeves about using correct english, when it's your native tongue, my only (teeny-tiny) issue with your posts is how often you cry wolf about gear. It's not the fact that you buy/sell.trade so often ... I'm certainly guilty of that. It's the WAY you ramble on, and on about the features, and how right it is FOR YOUR NEEDS etc. You bring alot of the heat on yourself, but posting amazing accolades for days, then dumping it, citing how it doesn't measure up ... just makes your reviews seem a bit like white noise. I mean, c'mon - THREE PA4Xs?
Who needs three units to decide if it's a good fit? You erase posts, and modify comments as soon as the temperature rises a tad. We all have our opinions, and I admit, mine may not always be in the majority, but one thing is certain: I MEAN NO HARM. I have no ill will, and if I ruffled your feathers too much - again, I'm sorry. You're my boy, and you always will be, but I'm trying to look out for you, and help you to not embarrass yourself with this flip-flop mentality.

This may not sound like much of an apology, but my heart is in it. We're mostly all guilty of teasing at one time, or another, and believe me - I'm not trying to be hurtful. I will be more careful with my words in the future, and I hope you forgive me.
My SX will be here before lunch tomorrow, and I hope to post some reactions before I have to go to work.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Dave, let me start with I am willing to make amends to whatever you meant with this post apology or whatever. Yes the "et tu brute" was aimed at you as the negativity knife coming from especially you multiple times in the past stung deep and hard. Also it wasn't just you but a few others who I will not mention and start more friction between members. I'm me & you are you, and we are very different but we are much the same also even tough you spell better then me just sayin'. Life is too short to bicker we have too many years together, too many breakfasts, lunches & dinners, etc, even late wee hours in your garage learning a new Arranger KB to get ready for jobs the next day. Many late nights in some secluded dark parking lot exchanging keyboards and gear at ungodly hours, filling in for each other on stage, too. But for now let tomorrow be the turning of a new page as we both and many others here on SZ receive the Yamaha SX900 to explore, play, discuss and hopefully enjoy. I feel better getting this all off my chest. So I guess yes I'm back.

Donny,
You bring much to this forum, and for me, I hope you don't change a thing. Whether you run hot and cold is just a result of your trying to get the perfect board for YOUR NEEDS. The results for me is a lot of good information. BTW, you are still king at finding pertinent links.

Happy to see you back.

Thank you Bernie,.... this time around with the SX900 arriving today I will not be touting pros/cons right away but instead give it some time playing before I assess the features with MY needs in mind.

take care

Donny, I never stopped loving you, you’re different and that’s good. You did what you had to do, the way you had to do it, and that has to be admired.

Like my friend said; “I did it My Way”. (smile)

Good health to you my friend, John C.
