OK Gary, here ya go

OK Gary, here ya go - 05/27/19 02:41 PM

I was fooling around with this oldie-but-goody the other day and decided to check out some different Youtube versions. When I heard the Johnny Cash version, I immediately thought of you, Gary. I just threw together a 'funk' version with my SEVEN and Compact 2x but i'd like to hear you do it 'Johnny Cash' style (or any way you want to). I just thought it would match up well with your voice type if done in the traditional manner. BTW, if you listen to 10 versions of this song, you'll hear 11 different sets of chord changes (which is good 'cause you don't have to worry about yours being wrong smile ).

My hastily done funk version (not to be taken seriously smile ).

Nice Chas. My favorite version is from Emmylou Harris.

Hey, "Buck" Giles! My office manager, who dislikes country music s much as I do is FLOORED! She loves this! My take is, there are many songs over time done to match different markets, with equal success. Many of Gladys Knight early songs were also recorded in other styles, crossing audience segments.

Personally, I felt this one inside....BIG TIME!

Think about you guys every day

Great rendition, Chas. I'll give it a try vocally when I get home later today from the boat. Still have some work to do before the first sailing venture down Chesapeake Bay.

Holy Crap, that was cool Chas. Loved your version. smile
Could you explain to this dummy, what's a SEVEN?

Re: OK Gary, here ya go - 05/28/19 03:27 PM

It's a Rhodes clone Larry, based on utilizing both sampling and physical modelling. Made by Crumar (maker of the Crumar Mojo organ). It also does a nice Wurly, DX7, Reeds, EPiano, Vibes, acoustic piano, and a not-so-hot organ. If you like any of these sounds, you'll love this instrument. Here's a description.

Hope you're feeling better these days.

Here are a couple of others I put up using my Seven (while you were away). Vibes and Suitcase Rhodes voices.

Nice combo, the SEVEN and a Compact 2x stage piano.
Sounds great. You know I love that kind of stuff.

Definitely going to have to stop on the next trip to Georgia, gotta check it out. I wonder who has more gear, you or Russ? LOL

Today, one month post surgery, getting better everyday. Thanks Bud

Here ya go, Chas. Two glasses of Jim Beam Honey Bourbon and oxygen tubes stuck up my nostrils. Hope you like it. I think it's a bit better than Johnny Cash. When I listened to his rendition it sounded as if his voice was on the downside.

Re: OK Gary, here ya go - 05/28/19 08:37 PM

AHA, I knew you could pull it off. Unlike my 'best friend' Donny smile , I don't usually put pressure on people to 'do stuff' on synthzone, but when I heard the Johnny Cash version, I knew I wanted to hear YOU do it. The simple style you chose was just perfect for doing this song in the traditional way. BTW, I agree with you about Johnny Cash's voice starting to go downhill on this song -- but the feeling is still there. Sparky made me check out the Emmylou Harris version. Excellent. Normally, I'm not a huge fan of 'country' STYLE music but I like this song so much and it lends itself to so many varied styles. It seems to go especially well with Country styles. I'm guessing Don Mason could do a decent job with it too.

Thanks again for taking this on. I knew you'd do a great job with it.

Just curious about something. Would this song be to 'morbid' to ever play in a nursing home? It's pretty but under the right (wrong?) circumstances, could produce some tears in an elderly audience.

Thanks Chas, and yes, this would bring on lots of tears in the nursing home circuit - no doubt about it. Don and I talked tonight about this song, and I hope he will provide us with some great renditions of it as well.

All the best,

Beautiful job Gary. A little high end feedback in places though.
Your voice sounds great on this one.

Thank you kind sir - you truly are a gentleman and a scholar. I didn't put on the headphones when I recorded this, so there probably is a bit of high end feedback in places. Whoops! wink

Nice job Gary... and your version, too... Chas. It amazes me that a song this old (more than 200 years) is still capable of bringing out human emotions... even in today's cynical world.

Thanks for sharing. ----Dave

The tune suits your style and voice very well Gary.

I liked your funky version Chas. What were you using for the backing?

Thanks Dave and Paul for taking time to listen and commenting - just glad Chas thought of me for this one and that I was still able to sing.
