Not Jazz or Christmas-y ... but ... - 12/11/18 01:52 PM

Donny posted a great style that he said could be used for the Kenny Rogers song "Through the Years" ... I couldn't come up with a style really similar to Donny's but I thought I would take one of the styles on my KORG and create my own backing track by adding some pads, strings and keys ...
Here's my first shot at it ...

AND IT'S NOT 29 MINUTES LONG NO MATTER WHAT BOX SAYS !

This just popped up and I'm listening to it now. It sounds REALLY good, very live.
It's exactly four minutes long, and I enjoyed every minute of it!

Tony, that song has extra special meaning for me right now. Your rendition was so honest and ..can I say it....soulful. Sure, the recording was first rate and the arrangement was great and the 900 sounded fantastic (after all, it IS a Korg), but it was the feeling...it really sounded like you meant every word (which I'm sure you did). It would be hard for anyone in a long-term marriage/relationship to listen to it without tearing up. Hot honeys are nice but the one that's been with you 'through the years' is the one that defines your life and gives it meaning.

Thanks for the kind words, gentlemen ... much appreciated ...

chas ... wow, 'soulful' - quite the compliment ... glad I did something meaningful for you ...
yes, it has special meaning for me as well, as Lydia and I celebrated our 55th wedding anniversary a couple of weeks ago ...
Also, Lydia's sister is going through a serious health issue right now ... they celebrated their 50th this year, and to see how they are handling this issue together is an inspiration in itself ...

When we had the band in NY our bass player was our 'featured' singer and this was one of 'his' songs ... I only started working on it after Donny's post about it ...

thanks again

Tony It’s nice to hear you singing --- it’s better than looking at your picture all the time.

Opps! There goes my sick humor again. If I didn’t love ya I wouldn’t do it.

Please post more of your music, John C.

Not only did he do a great job on the tune, he’s a good friend to me.

Tony and I met at one of the best breakfast restaurants in state of Rhode Island this morning and caught up on gigs, stories and life in general. Always a pleasure Tony!

Thank you all for the kind words and compliments ... they are VERY much appreciated ... blush

John C., not a problem my friend ... but be careful what you ask for ... wink

back atcha, Steve ... always good to spend time with you ...

Making one's own backing track is a lot of fun - especially when KORG makes it SO easy ... (and I imagine other KBs also, but I own a KORG) ... I took a style - I THINK it was 'POP BALLAD', went to the 16 track sequencer and made a quick backing track of just the chord changes, then started changing pads and deleting/adding/changing tracks ... This gives one a chance to have fun and be creative ... if you don't like the track you just put down, get rid of it and try something else ...
On the FLIP SIDE - there always is a FLIP SIDE, right? - for ME, playing with a backing track does not leave as much room for creativity during a performance, unless you are going to play mostly an instrumental over the track ...
There are a couple of iconic songs that I will always play a backing track for such as New York, New York ... just too much necessary background for me to play the whole thing live ...

If someone wants to move to Rhode Island, doesn't someone else have to move out to make room laugh ?

Actually, it is a State of one million (very confused, except for me and Steve) people, and there is still a lot of undeveloped land ...

I second that come up for a visit. Gets plenty warm here during July and August.

Donny, Not sure why you'd want pictures of 2 senior citizens eating huge breakfasts. Next time Tony and I get together to Jam we'll take photos.
