Watched most of it. Outstanding playing as usual. Genos sounds really good.
No DNJ I'm still NOT interested in one.

Once you gave it a thumbs down I never pursued it any further it just sounds too much like all the other Yamahas.... I can't get that out of my head sorry but I agree with you Don

Not, I fixed it. Oh I guess I'm interested in keeping up with the technology, but I wouldn't buy the Genos even if it were priced right. smile

Re: Live Stream Genos today - 11/11/18 03:08 PM

Understood.

Interesting how we seem to (bond?) with one brand/keyboard or the other.

I gigged for a little over a year with my PA4X. It’s an excellent keyboard but I never felt it was as good as my Genos for what I wanted to do.

Once I played Genos, I said to myself, yup this is the keyboard for me.

Different (keyboard) strokes for different folks.

Re: Live Stream Genos today - 11/11/18 04:15 PM

My 2 cents I have a Genos and a Pa4x. The choice of instruments is like food, coffee or even motor vehicles. Some days I like ice cream and pie other days I like steak, other days I like espresso and not just a regular coffee, some days I like driving my wife’s Chevy HHR but most of the time I like driving my mini van. My point is some days I like playing/gigging with the Genos other days/gigs it’s the Pa4x. Both are top notch in my opinion both keyboards have their strengths and I’m having a blast with both boards.

Re: Live Stream Genos today - 11/11/18 05:08 PM

Opinion:
If you gig, it’s the Pa4x, it’s a fantastic tool with a drive.
I do not own A Genos, but I have listened to it. It is one great keyboard for home or a show. It does not have the same drive as the Pa4x, no way. It has a lot of flourish and great instrument sounds, making it a very desirable keyboard. But it still like a Yamaha.

This not to say you can’t edit, or change your PA system and find what you want. It is about what you have decided was the best sound in a keyboard. Subjective!

It also depends on the type of music you favor. So why does Don Mason sound good no matter what keyboard he plays? Could be because of the type of music he plays, and he is a country boy? (smile)

I have a S975 and a Pa4x --- I keep going from one to the other trying to decide which to keep. I’ll sell either one, but, the S975 is my choice. You may not relate to what I am saying, but the S975 YAMAHA is gentle with beautiful sounds – without editing.

I am NOT interested in Genos. It was a typo, which I corrected. I do like to keep up with all the brands, and I admit the Genos is the best sounding Yamaha ever. Even the drums are better, and it's about time!
It isn't a good fit for me, and I maintain it is WAY overpriced. At present I have three great arrangers, PA4X, PA1000 and Roland EA7. Something will have to go and it will most likely be the PA1000. The PSR S970 will ship out Tuesday.
The 4X isn't really mine to sell, just to use, so if that arrangement ever changes I will most likely replace it with another 4X. It's great for what I do as far as operational features and vocal processing.

This is important to me. I doubt manufacturers, even though they include options to edit, put their products out with the notion that they are loaded with mediocre sounds and styles that can only be good or great if the user dedicates countless hours to tweaking and editing.
Videos of demos from retailers or paid artists are done with out of the box sounds and styles which we use to compare. That's what you will hear in a trip to the store or online before you plunk down your thousands$$.
I say impress me out of the box. I will spend my programming time arranging registrations/song files, loading lyrics, creating setlists, practicing, singing, readying to play. I will edit as I discover things that I would like to change, but it is not my first priority. I can typically find a stock style/sound to use for a song I need with the plethora of them available from the factory.
Give me your best up front..that's what I'm paying for.
Of course there are exceptions as you go along. But my point is if I am paying full price for your instrument I want it complete, not half prepared where I have to finish it myself so by the time I do, there's a new model out that may have done it for me.

Re: Live Stream Genos today - 11/12/18 09:52 AM

The Secret:
Play the keyboard 70% of the time --- edit 30% then you will find the enjoyment of playing music.

Editing and sorting and buying another keyboard can robs you of the reason you are playing music. I have been so guilty if doing the same thing; no more.

John C.

PS, I am not advocating that buying a keyboard is a bad thing --- it just should not be the beginning and end to what we do.

Re: Live Stream Genos today - 11/12/18 03:43 PM

I more or less never edit, as you can also see in my live stream. I'm basically only using OTS presets, which is exactly the reason why I like Genos. They are quite good (or at least 1 of the 4) so I don't have to bother about finding, layering - or even worse - editting sounds.

Best Regards,

Joost

I never want the factory to dictate my sound styles and arrangements on any keyboard... and sound like every other player...

Re: Live Stream Genos today - 11/12/18 04:23 PM

What other players? You keep telling us that arranger keyboard players are few and far between and those that are still around will soon be gone. The only way you would sound like the other guy is if you played exactly like he or she does, and that's not very likely. And, if you were playing a Genos, there would be no one in your part of the world that sounded like you - Genos owners are rare as hen's teeth in central Jersey. wink

Nobody (including NH captive audiences) comes to see arranger players for their pianistic/keyboard skills. In 90% of the situations where arrangers are used, VOCALS are the main feature. If your singing is lousy enough then MAYBE they'll listen to the keyboard but it's unlikely they'll be returning for any of your future performances. REALLY good vocals make the choice of arranger keyboards pretty much moot.

You haven't lost your touch, or your enthusiasm, Joost...excellent instrumental work and creative playing...as per usual!

Very few here put up instrumentals actually using the Genos'(or any other arranger, for that matter) arranger accompaniment feature itself, so it is a nice treat indeed.

Really enjoyed the video Joost, great job.

Joost does a great job of showing some of what the Genos can do. I share his videos with musical friends who are starting to show an interest in arrangers.

So far during all the years I've been into arrangers, I've never heard any player sound like every other player.
Only when they play commercial midifiles and playback MP3 files, which I never does myself.
I have heard lots of the same factory styles used, but the keyboardplayer still don't sound the same as all others..
Anyway, I agree that it is important to do some steps to make it sound 'yourself' when perform gigs and so on. wink

I think Jost is showing the Genos 'as it is', and he does it really great.
He is also a very very good and excellent musician.

They all sound alike when you use the long intros! Then when the intro finishes, the level of the performance usually drops several notches. smile

Joost,

You are absoloutely the most talented arranger player I have seen to date. What I would not give to have your playing skills...

I can only utter one word - AMAZING!!! You inspire me. I am sure you inspire many others over here too.

Thank you for sharing with us. I have downloaded all your Genos videos and cannot stop watching those. I am sure you can bring out the best in ANY arranger.
