My new 2.1... 6000w speaker system... - 09/21/18 04:33 PM

Over the summer, I changed some of my speakers with deals I found on FB Marketplace.

I snagged another pair of Yamaha DXR10 speakers from a local fitness club. $600 for a pair of DXR10... On-Stage wall mounts... 2-25’ roadhog 1/4” cables with gold connectors... 4-10’ Roadhog 1/4” cables with gold connectors. Speakers were a tad dusty but it was a great find. Now I have 4 DXR10 speakers.

I also got a deal on a Yamaha StagePAS 600i system. Already rented that system to a ladies vocal quartet and made $300 over 3 gigs.

I sold 2 older Motif ES keyboards on FB Marketplace. Turned that money into 2 QSC K8.2 speakers from a local installer... $550 a piece. I wanted them for monitors for my bigger gigs.

Then I sold my EV SbA760 95 pound subwoofer on FB Marketplace and ended up with the QSC KS112 new 2000w 12” Subwoofer... 62lbs with casters!

Now, that 62 pound sub packs a punch! The Genos sounds fantastic through the 2.1 setup. Out of the mixer in stereo to the QSC KS112... left and right out to the QSC 8.2 (27 pounds each) pair... great 2.1 system with a total of 3000w/6000w peak wattage. The 55 plus crowds will be rocking!!!

It all comes down to the sound I want to hear. I have personally gigged with the following systems over the years...

2 Mackie SRM450 ... added an EV SbA760 Sub.
2 RCF ART 310a ... still had the sub for bigger gigs.
2 Yamaha DXR10 ... still had the sub... if needed.

Next gig will be...
2 QSC K8.2 with QSC KS112 Sub. But the Sub is needed to get the sound I want.

QSC K8.2 w/cover and lockable IEC cable
QSC K8.2 w/cover and lockable IEC cable
QSC KS112 w/cover and lockable IEC cable
2 - 18’ TRS to XLR-M (from mixer to subwoofer)
1 - 6’ XLR (from sub to top speaker on sub pole)
1 - 30’ XLR (from sub to top speaker on speaker stand)
1 - 25’ Edison extension cord
1 - 12’ Edison Quadbox
1 - Samson light duty speaker stand
1 - 20mm threaded non-adjustable Sub pole

The system weighs 116 lbs together.
K8.2 = 27 pounds each
KS112 = 62 pounds but has casters

It produces 3000w as a stereo 2.1 system with a peak of 6000w.

" Can you turn it down, we want to talk " LOL !!!

Seriously, nice system, just don't get carried away with all that power.

Just went to hear a sing-a-long pianist the other night. So loud you really couldn't talk and he covered up the audiences singing and calling out requests, so what's the point.

2 QSC 12's and an EV sub in a room of maybe 50 people. Overkill

Thanks, Donny... all of my future picture posts are all because of you!!

Bill... I hear you! Know your crowd. In all my speaker setups, I always want to have enough for as many different situations I encounter.

We did a gig at church twice. The first time, 30 people showed up. I brought my RCF ART310a 350w Speakers and it was fine. A few years later, I changed systems and got the call for the same gig. New system was my Yamaha DXR10 and my EV Sub. It would be overkill for the 30 but this time... 200 people showed up because the church advertised. It was a one hour show for $200. It sounded full and rich... good acoustics in the room helped. Having the low end support was perfect.

We packed up at the end... the sub was heavy, it was February and icy... to to me, it was worth it having the extra!

Then to our surprise, we open up what we thought was a $200 check and it was doubled to $400. They took an offering and split it with us!

Having extra is ok if you don’t let it get too big in the room. Not having enough can be a bad thing.

In a real world scenario, this system is only twice as loud as a 300 watt (RMS) system from yesteryear, but it will be cleaner, and have ability to process peaks of almost twice that range. Having lots of headroom is almost always a blessing. A strong vocalist can suck up the entire available power with one note. Good luck with your new rig!

It’s all a numbers game with portable sound systems. I love how they say... ignore the watts and see what the max dB is! If I go into the mid 90’s... I’m going to be too loud. But I have the headroom in case I need it in another situation.

First test is a DJ gig on October 6th... I’ll let all of you know how it goes!!

That's a lot of sound you have there, do you have a licence to use it lol. It prices out to about a $1 a watt in OZ just for the speakers and sub.

Re: My new 2.1... 6000w speaker system... - 09/30/18 08:16 PM

The whole system weighs...
QSC K8.2 - 27 lbs (Top Left)
QSC K8.2 - 27 lbs (Top Right)
QSC KS112 - 62 lbs with casters (Subwoofer)

Total weight = 116 pounds

Total cost with covers = $2166

3000 watts continuous... 6000 watts peak...

$0.72 per watt US
