Request: Hymn Fake Books

Request: Hymn Fake Books - 07/08/18 11:17 PM

I've been asked to do some church services and don't really read hymnal type music without a LOT of practice and effort. It seems the only way I might be able to do this is if I had some hymn fake books.

Thanks in advance.

This seems to be the most extensive hymn fake book with over 1,000 hymns. As for me, I don't need a hymn fake book as I cut my teeth on hymns and I was a church pianist for many years. You many find just about all hymns too easy; most of the hymns have 3 or 4 chords only.

It is very easy to chord the hymns ahead of time. I chorded a Methodist hymnal and used it for years,

I have been playing for Sunday services at my village church
until they can get a permanent organist (I`m not interested).
They email me the hymns each week on Monday and I have a copy of the hymn book they use.My biggest problem is that a lot of the hymns have two or sometimes three tunes to choose from so it means sorting out which one they usually use.

Whilst not a fake book, the "Mission Praise" book is very legible and most arrangements, even of more traditional hymns, have chords. Where a capo is used for guitar both normal and capo chords are shown

By stark contrast the "Singing The Faith" book is less legible in general terms, is sometimes maliciously arranged, and chords are not shown as often. Also if the chords are given as using a capo, only the capo chords are shown. We avoid this book unless there is no alternative.

And indeed multiple tunes add to the fun. As I can't sight read well enough these days I just have to learn them all!
