Genos Rig evolution ...

Hi ... A few photos of my rig "in progress" ... one photos is of my most recent Tyros5 setup, before I bought Genos. I know that I don't *need* the 2nd keyboard; just have always had a 2nd keyboard as part of my rig. Way back, I used to have a 76-note lower keyboard and 61-note upper. That was when I was 20+ years younger, and weight of rig didn't matter as much! :-) Having 49 keys is a nice compromise, much more "comfortable" than my previous 25-note controller I used for some years.

Anyway, I'm leaning toward using the M-Audio Code49 keyboard on top of my Genos. I have programmed the buttons/sliders/pads on the Code49 to control the Genos. I have 36 Genos sounds I can call up quickly, and the sliders have 1 function I've set up for each which never changes ... so they make a nice addition to the sliders on the Genos. The drum pads are programmed to send 16 different MIDI notes to Channel 10, which I have set to Drums on the Genos. Nice for quick 'impromptu' drum fills or hits.

Jim nice rig, besides all that gear there is a full PA also,....
good luck with it. We are so different in our gear and setups for our own needs, and how we differ doing it,....but I always say if it works for YOU and sounds great that's all that matters.
A rig setup is a very personal choice for EACH player, & how much gear you want to carry to a job,...there are no rules just comfortable playing to make it fun, transportable,
and enjoyable for you and the audiences..

Beautiful setup and pretty high tech

Nobody has ever come up with a better stand system than the old "pipes". I have several stands "made" from that stuff and nothing is more versatile, strong, light weight and easy to transport. Been using 'em for about 40 years!

Yeah, I love the old-style USS stands; I too have been using them for 40 years. I have 2 of them, plus a lot of misc. parts etc., so I can easily adapt each time I buy a new keyboard (such as the move from Tyros5 to Genos).

To DNJ ... yes, I try "somewhat" to minimize what I carry, but take what I want to feel I'm doing things they way I like and enjoy. The Genos, plus the 10-pound (<5kg) Code49 does not seem too bad. That and a small PA (for most gigs), and bag with a few cables, and I'm good to go. Gotta use the Rock'n'Roller cart of course! :-) That cart is a major back-saver. . . I actually have 2 of them (a model 12 "all-terrain", and a newer model 6 with the non-pneumatic "glider" wheels).

And all I need to cable up the M-Audio Code49 is a short USB cable (from Genos to Code49) to supply power, and a short MIDI cable.

The extra keyboard does have benefits as you mentioned..

Yes it's a great stand Unless you have to setup breakdown everyday and load it in your car... but for me and convenience the X Stand is still King..

... which you almost never have to do anymore!

Exactly Dave but when I did play out x-stand was the king..... use what you need enjoy what you carry.

Yeah, I just fold up that stand (shown in the pics), and slide it into my van. Takes about 10 seconds (literally) to fold it "in half" and have it ready to carry. I have a strong Velco strap attached in a place where I can close that, and it keeps the stand from opening. Then I just slide it it. Next gig (or at home), I slide it out, open it up, and in ~10 seconds it's ready to use. It's quite light-weight, more so than it appears (people are often surprised when they offer to help, and they lift it expecting it to be heavy!

Probably wouldn't be the case if I had a smaller car, but a mini-van is great in that I can just slide that right in on top of my other gear, in seconds ...

Fran - nice picture! Nice to see that same model (M-Audio Code49 in use in a similar way! What I have done too, is change the color of the buttons - since I use them to recall sounds on the Genos, I use (somewhat) the "Theatre Organ" color code: red button color for anything that is a reed or brassy; yellow button color for anything strings or string-like, white button color for "flute" (or B3 organ) type sounds. I use blue for "percussive" sounds like vibes, marimba, celeste, music-box, chimes etc. (this is not a theatre-organ stop color! :-)

Question for you guys using a van or SUV for transport.

Do you have any protective kind of barrier between you and the equipment in the back, in case of an abrupt stop which would send your equipment flying forward?

I've been thinking about such a setup, like a sheet of 1" ply fitted to width and height fixed across the back of the front seats.

Same as Jim, I fold it flat (2 seconds), pick it up, (maybe 4 pounds) and slide it on top of my other gear in the back of my Expedition.

How is the VIP integration with the M-uadio?

Hi - not sure what "VIP" integration is? I'm using basic MIDI commands with the M-Audio to Genos, and all works well. . . nothing fancy or complex though . . .

The Code series is among the supported Controllers listed in VIP... but I still prefer to use my DAW to play the instruments (MixCraft Pro 8)
