Re: Need some help - 08/16/17 10:32 AM

Ron,
I have been using the Ipad Pro - the large one for about 4 or 5 years. Bought it the week it came out. I use it to display leadsheets. I now have over 4000 leadsheets on it. There are many websites that offer lyrics for download - some free. Some contain chords.

On my Ipad pro I use two apps for leadsheet display.
One is GoodReader. One is UnrealBook. I like both for different reasons.
Each gets regular free updates. I have used these for probably 8 years now. Others are out there but I have no experience with them. Also, each cost me only $4.00.

For my Ipad Pro I use the GigEasy Universal Mount and highly recommend it. Just google GigEasy.

Feel free to email or PM if you have other questions about my post. Also, the Ipad Pro is not cheap but is money well spent in my opinion. Also, it is a tax deduction for you music business.

The ipad pro 12.9 is incredible as a music reader...

But if you only use it as a music reader thats a hell of a lot of money.. but the size differnce with a 10’” is huge and a treat for older eyes...

There are no 12” + android tablets, but as a musicreader only, an android tablet would work just as well... but the size difference is so huge...

However, if you would use the ipad as a music creation tool on top of as a sheatreader, or as a laptop substitute, it is definately worth every dime you invest in it.

Here is a thread I posted awhile back. The price has a typo. It is $127.

Several members followed the advise and are quite pleased with the Tablet and program.

I use a laptop. You can use Word or a free word processor. I like that you can categorize by artist, name, genre, recent...about anything you want.
You can get any size and pay about anything you like, but word processors take very little power. All I use mine for is to display lyric charts, play MP3s on breaks, maybe search the internet occasionally. You can also display PDFs of course. You can zoom the lyric size, etc., very flexible.
Mine is powered by USB so no big power transformer.
You can get one with solid state memory for under $200.! If you need extra memory USB sticks are very inexpensive.

Re: Need some help - 08/16/17 11:53 AM

Why not just just use an inexpensive netbook PC? You can download all the stuff you need, open it in several great programs that you can get for free. You can purchase a refurbished netbook, which is not any larger than some of the tablets I've seen lately, for as little as $50. I've been using a 9-inch Acer Aspire netbook PC for a decade, never had a single problem with it, and the view is HD from nearly any angle.

Good luck on whatever you decide upon.

Unfortunately, not EVERYONE can ...

Re: Need some help - 08/16/17 12:56 PM

My guess..... you are not memorizing the songs, but fake your way through the tune, especially if you are also a singer..

Sure maybe you can remember a hundred songs, maybe a bit more.. but if you take request, a couple hundred songs won't cover it.

Now most pros can work their way through a song, by ear with standard chord changes..

If you are really good at memorizing songs... you will remember the original key and real chord changes...not three chords grin

I would challenge anyone that thinks they memorized more than a hundred songs... I am talking about melody, chords all in the original keys..

At one time ... using fake books , I remembered maybe 300 songs...all standards.. Repeated performing is the key..

I do believe I had a photographic mind years ago.. I could remember the location in the fake books, even page numbers...

Even today, I play standards in the original keys.. Habits are hard to break smile

Re: Need some help - 08/16/17 01:49 PM

Fran, I agree, I know hundreds of entertainers and not a single one of them can remember the chord changes and lyrics to more than a couple dozen songs at best. Like me, they rely on their netbook PCs and laptops to perform their songs, and most have about 300 songs at most in their PCs to draw from for requests. I put all of mine in MS Word and stored them in a folder, which automatically alphabetizes them so it's just a matter of typing the first letter of the song title to get to that category, then using my hidden, wireless mouse, scrolling down to the song title, double click it, and it's instantly on the screen. Some time ago, I posted my entire lyrics folder on the site so others could download it. To date, I has been downloaded 587 times from this site.

Now, if I wanted to get really fancy, I could have went with a foot pedal connected to the USB of the PC and used to to scroll, but I never needed to go that far. I think the program was free with the pedal which sold for about $29 online.

AS for the photographic mind, Carol told me the mind was the second thing to go - I can't remember what the first was. wink

All the best,

Gary cool

Fran....

Very well said.

A member is asking for help with some digital readers, and members are giving constructive advice on their setups, and of course the topic goes south with discussions about memorizing and "not for me".

PS: I seem to recall a recent post of a song played "from memory" with the wrong chords, and was immediately taken down when a member pointed out the chords were wrong.

Re: Need some help - 08/16/17 02:14 PM

Jerry I have also heard many players play the wrong chords even with the charts, no one is perfect chart or not,...and as for playing songs in the correct keys? if your a singer you play what key you need to sing in period,....if you wanna stick you face glued in a book while in front of people to me it looks wrong for a solo player in so many ways, and if you don't think so video yourself and look back at it,....if in a band and your in the background that's ok but not as an up front vocalist,...IMO
eye to eye contact is imperative when singing or playing performing etc,...but hey what do I know?
well I guess the experts here know better so be it.....
right now I have an Ice Cold Michelob and a shot of Jack to attend to have a nice evening everyone.

Re: Need some help - 08/16/17 03:54 PM

Don't be confused smile

The original key does not mean the "correct key"..

Original keys are the key the writer determined best for his score.. and it usually does sound the best..

The correct key is the one that accompany your voice the best..
It may not be the best key musically for the song...

I do think it is detrimental to maintain our skills...using the transpose button to play all songs in "C"... It will make you lazy...
Transpose feature is great....mostly to transpose a half step or two.. or to make vocals a bit easier..

More than that... what you play on the keys and what you hear are so unnatural ....and if you have perfect pitch, or even relative pitch...it can drive you crazy..

Just an expert's opinion. wink

But I know and appreciate the difference...especially when I play for myself... smile

I don't play for the money or ego...just self satisfaction wink

Ron.... DonM and Gary gave you good suggestions , also Bachus with the tablet approach..

BTW: Donny that little old lady may be an accomplished piano player....and knows that "To each his own" is in the key of Eb and not "C"... shocked

Based on Jerry's post I purchase one of these and am very happy with it, also talked TonyMads into using one and going digital. For $227 you can't go wrong especially because it's a piece of cake to sync Korg's Songbook to the Mobile Sheets Pro app. I know if you're playing piano it's a moot point about syncing to the keyboard. Nevertheless it's a winner and I will add I'm an iPad fan but this unit does the job very well for money that amounts to chump change.

Pro 12 android tab...........I'm not understanding. I purchased a Dell 15" laptop fully loaded.....to help with the music.....sheet music.......mp3's.....software programs, etc.

Mostly to read my music. But I have to place it vertical if I want to read my sheet music. And it's heavy....about 5 lbs.

So what actually is a tablet? The OP is Android....different from Windows. That I know. But...does it connect to the Internet or it just pulls up what you put on it (it has an internal hard drive?)?

what's the advantages of having a tablet over a laptop? Can I read my music PDF's much easier?

Mark
---------------------
Yes.......that's how I'd like to read my music....like Jerry posted here

http://www.synthzone.com/forum/ubbthread...ader#Post429258

Now...how do you navigate.....with a mouse and keyboard......or touch screen? And the particular software is why that music looks so good onscreen?

Re: Need some help - 08/17/17 08:38 PM

Ron........I scanned my music as PDF's so you can read them on any system. I have a lot of music and a lot in original sheet music format. Is there anything you need in particular?

Thanks Steve......I viewed it and it's exactly what I just might buy. The price is good, plenty of storage, and it looks pretty too. I'm assuming a lot of players are using them at that price and functionality.

If YOU need any PDF's yourself, let me know.

Mark, Glad to read that could be a solution for you. Thanks too for the offer of the PDFs, at this time I have many and they are doing the job. Also slowly I have been using a phone scanner app to turn some piano solo sheets from when I was a youngster into PDFs.

mark ... As Steve mentioned I am also using the Pro12 tablet and it is working out very well ... Your PDFs have to be loaded into the tablet - I scan onto Google drive, so all my charts are stored there as well, then D/L to the tablet ...
I assign a number to the song on my KORG Pa900 Songbook, then through the Mobile Sheets software assign that number to the PDF ... Once that is done I can call up a song through the Songbook and the PDF comes up on the screen, OR I can select a song on the tablet and the correct KB settings come up on the PA900 ...
It takes some time at first, but is well worth the effort ...
Here is what my setup looks like:

Tony,

If I’m not mistaken you need to upload to the photos to a site like PhotoBucket. at least that’s the one I use for photos here on SZ. Once the photos are loaded there, using Photobucket will give you a direct link to the photos, so the photos will appear here in your post.

Unfortunately, Photobuckt changed the rules and you can no longer host third party site photos such as synthzone. Just use the synthzone files feature in teh full reply screen and you should be able to upload them directly to the site from your PC.
