Sock a little Polk Salad to me! - 05/06/16 11:00 PM

A friend asked me to record this for him, and I did on the job tonight. Thought I'd share it with you too. It's the Korg PA4x, Sennheiser E945 mic. Recorded to line-ins on Tascam DR05 digital recorder. Only editing was normalizing in Audacity and converting from WAV to MP3.
The song is Polk Salad Annie, written and recorded by Louisiana native Tony Joe White, and some guy named Elvis did it too.

Don, I sincerely believe your rendition is better than the original. Better guitar licks, more of them, and cleaner, crisper vocals. Sure beats the Hell out of the one I posted some time ago.

I tried to smoke a little polk once.....CHOKE....CHOKE.

I'd play this with you with a great big smile on my face...in fact, I've played it many more times than I'll ever admit.

I'd play B-3 with a walking left hand and full chords.

We could trade leads.

WHAT FUN!

This is great, Don! I cannot, for the life of me, do any guitar-sounding licks. I, like Russ, am an organ guy. Most of my music is organ, piano, strings and horns. My foray into guitar is a Hawaiian guitar patch that I use for a countryside sound. One of these days I'm gonna make down to Ernest's just hear you perform. God job, good buddy.

Cassp, get your ass down there - he's not gonna work till he's my age. The fishing's good though his golf swing is beginning to get a bit lighter. wink

Cass, I would love it if you could come down for a spell. We'll have you eatin' crawfish and suckin' the heads! smile
You can do guitar licks if you listen to what the guitar players do and then may your keyboard sound the same way! You can't do them if you only play organ, piano, strings and horn though!
Seriously, I've gotten to the point where I really don't think about what my right hand is doing when I play guitar leads; it just sorta happens. Took a long time to get to that point though, I must admit.

Don,

Nice rendition....missing a bit of the bass end on my iPad as a listening device.

Sent the link of your recording to a good buddy(early60's) who has been playing a Les Paul, playing blues for years.

I think he'll get a kick out of the nice rendition you did of this song.

Got me thinking. I've got a few songs I should load up MP3.

Thanks for sharing.

Wow Don,
That was brilliant.
Just logged in and spotted your post and thought I'd have a listen.
Even stopped hubby in his tracks in the middle of his Destiny ps4 game.
Normally if the house was burning down around him, he wouldn't notice he gets so engrossed in his game.

To my surprise I heard a voice say, " that guy sounds awesome".
"Yep, that's a buddy of mine"
Haha
Really sounded great.

Hi Don,
Just taking a bit of a break. Been working on my other hobby.
Still have all of my keyboards though, so no doubt I'll take it up again.

Ooh! Might have to send one. Only give them away nowadays to family and friends.

Might be good for advertising if I ever go back to selling them.

Just read that Tony Joe White passed away at 75.

Singer-songwriter Tony Joe White, a prolific tunesmith whose swamp-soaked 1968 pop hit “Polk Salad Annie,” reflected his Louisiana upbringing, died yesterday, Wednesday, October 24th, of natural causes at his home in Leipers Fork, Tennessee, just outside Nashville. He was 75.

White, who had a Top Ten record with “Polk Salad Annie,” also saw it popularized by Elvis Presley. He was also perhaps best known as the writer of the deeply atmospheric and soulful “Rainy Night in Georgia,” a Number Four pop hit for Brook Benton in 1970 and covered by a number of other acts including Hank Williams Jr., B.J. Thomas, Shelby Lynne, and as a duet by Conway Twitty and Sam Moore.

Yes, Tony Joe is a big loss for the music industry and for us "cajuns". I'm not really a Cajun, but neither was he. He was from North Louisiana.
Our friend Bill Pittman (semilivemusic) wrote a song a few years ago entitled "Tony Joe White is Black". It is pretty good too. I'll try to find a recording of it. Despite the title, it is anything but racist.
R.I.P. Tony Joe.

I'm again reminded that my good friend Don Reeves passed away August 28th, 2017. He was undergoing chemotherapy for cancer and had a severe reaction to the drug. They tried to treat it with large doses of steroids but he didn't make it. His faith was strong until the end and he emailed me shortly before saying he didn't think he would survive this, and he was prepared to go on to a better place. In response to my next email, his wife responded telling me he was gone.
What a wonderful person he was, in addition to being an extremely talented singer, songwriter and player. I miss him.

Don:

I don't care if you recorded it using a washboard and a kazoo... LOL... you are a performer to be "reckoned with"... as they say in Polk Salad Country up in Sebastian County, Arkansas. I agree with Gary, your version is as good, if not better, than all the rest.

Thanks for sharing. B-T-W... I'm starting to really enjoy the 970 you practically gave me. What are friends for?

Give ol' Pittman a kick in the chins for me. Great guy!

Earl, I've heard Don perform this song many times with many different arranger keyboards - all sounded great, but I sincerely believe his best rendition was with a Yamaha.

Good luck,

Nice job.

I didn’t realize that the Polk plant was toxic to humans. Not a good idea to eat Polk salad...???

Re: Sock a little Polk Salad to me! - 10/28/18 08:24 AM

It's not good for you if you eat it raw. If you cook it, it is fine. I'm not a fan though. Don't much care for any type of greens.
It is actually spelled Poke, but Tony Joe called it Polk on his album and now it is going by either spelling.
It is really good for you if you are constipated. smile
