Mic Techniques?

Col got me interested in this subject.
I've always "eaten" the mic, using it extremely close, usually touching it with lips.
Most of the live acts I see pretty much do it this way.
How do you do it and why?

I'm in close , to keep the live background noise down to a minimum.

I'm always about three feet away....hopefully to avoid the actual sound of my voice from being discovered! HA HA HA! I envy you crooners!

I'm lips on the mic always as it should be less air in-between...
for power notes I back off a bit to avoid over-modulating..

A headset mic is a big No NO for my style of singing although many enjoy using it.

And of course Technic means squat if you don't have a good voice to begin with.

Years of stage experience helps vocal dynamics also.

Also if YOU don't have complete Confidence in your vocal ability and are able to COMMAND the room with your voice this all means nothing.

With the Crown CM-311A headset mic, the instructions clearly state that your lips should be touching the mic, which prevents pfff sounds. Additionally, this particular mic is so short ranged that it's nearly impossible to have a problem with background sounds. That said, you need a fair degree of vocal control in order to effectively use a headset mic. No pull-aways here - just vocal control.

Shure has a PDF document that is really informative. They say lead vocals are best from touching mic to 4 inches.
On all the other keyboards, it seems that the VH works best if closely miced. On the SD7 it seems to track better away from it a little. Still experimenting.

I think using a Mic at a distance works in a quiet environment whilst recording but in a live situation using the mic close to your mouth is probably better. The video's using the G70 was done at home.
