Honestly I like the new bigger display,....and perhaps some of the new styles which hopefully will play on the S950 also? Arps vs multipads? big deal, I'll have to actually play one to make a better opinion.Other then that not much to get excited about yet vs my S950?

Mike, just another great example of how wonderful an arranger keyboard can sound in the hands of a highly skilled player. Lets be honest, any keyboard sounds only as good as the person that's playing it, and as long as that person has taken the time to explore all of the options offered by the operating system. Without that knowledge and skill, none of them sound very professional.

Now, if I were not headed rapidly toward retirement, I would seriously consider a new S-970, but that ain't gonna happen, at least not for the foreseeable future. I'll stick with my trusty S-950, which does all that and then some.

Thanks for the links, Mike,

Sounds really nice ... but does it sound like that OOTB ? keys

Re: New Yamaha PSR-S770 Demo! - 07/29/15 05:37 PM

Tony, it has been my experience over the years that most of the Yamaha arranger keyboards sound damned good OOTB. Don Mason never touched the EQs more than a smidgeon and said they sounded best when left in the flat position. I tuned a little, but not much to get really great sounds out of the S-950.

I never got a reply from Michael Vonken about whether or not the keyboards he demoed were specially tuned for demoing, but my PR buddy at Yamaha said he didn't think that anyone touched them prior to the demos other than to learn the intricacies of the OS and features - that was about it.

I suspect that what you're hearing is OOTB - nothing more, nothing less.

All the best,

My only beef with all my Yamaha's OOTB is the default reverb on the mic @ 40. Waaaaay tooo much reverb. I usually reset it to under 20.

Ed, usually the default is echo not reverb, but you are right, it is at 40, way too high.

.

Judging by the demo only, the PSR-S770 sounds fantastic. Much better than the previous PSR. The drums, in particular, sound very realistic and live. I think the overall sound is an improvement. I thought I might have to either get a Korg PA900, or a Roland BK-9 to get better drums and a more live feel, but not any more. Of course, like you, Donny, I will have to try it first. If the PSR-S770 sounds that good, then the PSR-S970 will probably sound even better. I'm leaning towards the 970 for now, because of the extra sounds, styles extra goodies.

You're welcome, Gary! I agree that it's the player that makes the difference, but if a player can make a so-so keyboard sound good, imagine how he or she can make a great keyboard sound.

Thanks for posting Mike! I am trying to sell my S910 now and will definitely upgrade to S970 once the S910 is safely in someone else's music room. smile I also look forward to the black/grey case compared to the silver one on the S910.... upgrading looks at this point to be a "win-win" for S900/S910 (and earlier) owners!

You are welcome, Randy.

I prefer my keyboards black, too. Somehow, they just look more serious and professional.
