I believe that Yamaha wants you to use the compression to optimize the load on the speakers. Mastering tools help mask the subpar vocal processor in the unit. I don't mean to sound harsh, but that's the way I see it. If you use all the effects to smooth out and flatten the signal, the harmonizer works as good as it can, and you notice less of it's shortcomings.
I advise all serious singers to be stingy with compression. It can seriously alter your dynamic range, and change your performance if you're not really careful with it. In the right hands, in the right amounts ... it's a great tool, but more often than not, it detracts from a good singers performance.

In my case, since I use 2-3 harmonized voices pretty often, I like the fact that a compressor can keep the "boys" in check when I get excited. Internal kb speakers (like many of you, here) can only take so much of Uncle Dave.

Compressor is always good to use if you understand what it does and how it works.

I've got a feeling that the soon-to-be-announced TOTL Casio Arranger KB is going to meet all your needs smile smile smile. I hear it will 'bluetooth' all the screen info to a pair of special glasses (tinted, for outdoor use) and work even better when seated in a slouched position.
