Korg Pa900 Recording test

being new to this Kb I wanted to try the recording feature in the PA900 so I just picked a Bolero style & recorded a short song off the top of my head no rhyme or reason mistakes and all to see what the REC procedure is and what it would sound like. Of course down the road I will get more into it deeper with vocals,.

To be serious, although it is against my nature, that sounds great Donnie!

Very nice. To me, half of good arranger playing is having the good taste to know which lead instrument to play over the backing and then being able to do a good simulation of that instrument (ie. not playing a trumpet lead like it was a piano). Nice job. Korg has always been my favorite arranger for styles.

I have to Donny, you made a good decision not to get the Ketron SD7.

The Korg has a more professional sound,both styles and lead

voices. That brass sounded very polished compared to the SD7.

Looking forward to hearing more of your recordings,throw in a

vocal the next time.

Sounds really nice, Donny ... one thing I have learned - which I am sure you know with all your prior KORG experience - is that you often have to kill a style part so it does not interfere with your solo work ...
I love the KORG and I thank you for turning me on to it a couple of years ago ...

I suppose in all my years I've played arrangers, I've never played a Bolero style. Yours sounded so good, that I called one up on the SD7 and recorded something. I called asked DNJ if it was o.k. if I posted it for comparison and he said sure. So here it is. Certainly different from the Korg. I like 'em both, but then I BOUGHT them both so I should.
It was the first time I really used the onboard audio recorder. Levels may have been a little hot.

Recorded directly on the P800 using on board recorder and harmonizer.

Thank's a lot Donny, after listening to your demo this morning I thought there must be a similar Bolero style on the Pa800. Having found it I was going to play something but I haven't used the Pa800 much since I bought it and I'm severely out of practice so I thought I'd try a vocal.

The Pa800 hasn't an MP3 recorder fitted as standard so I bought the Dual MP3 card from a guy in over there in the State's and this was my first attempt using it. I also used the on board VH which to my ears didn't sound to bad. It might be interesting to do the song again using the VLT2 for the harmony.

Nice to see you back using a Korg, it seems a long time since you had the Micro-Arranger.

You were always there for me ...I still use many of your tips & tricks when I set up my PA3x & Now PA900.Good luck with your KORG PA800 it can really do some amazing things once you "Dig In"...

Nice to see you back on the keyboard. That classic John Lennon song was very well done. Didn't think the vocal was at all shaky. A few weeks ago I got very excited as I was able to download all the Korg PA 800 styles converted to Yamaha. I've always wanted an 800 or 900 since renting a PA 800 a couple of years ago. I liked the convenience of onboard harmony and a lot of the unplugged styles. When I got all those styles I thought I was getting a free Korg. Alas, too good to be true. There were way to many quirks especially in the styles I wanted most. So I still have that Korg void in my life although I still have my PA 80. I noticed that a lot of the PA 80 styles are still around on the 800 and 900. Keep in touch my friend.

Don the best style conversions IMO to KORG aren't from Yamaha, .......
I would say most Ketron & Roland G70 styles can be converted and adapted, tweaked, etc, into usability most times on Korg Arrangers. There is an abundance of Korg Styles out there from all over the world, Korg also has offered players many free Bonus styles, updates, resources for FREE over the years.

I just re-recorded the same song but using the Voice Live Touch 2 with a couple of tweaks in the style using a string pad and a tad faster. I also used the Zoom R16 for the recording.

Some random thoughts about this thread:

1) Donny started it as a test of the on-board recording feature of the Pa900...
2) DonM then played a Bolero to compare the styles...
3)Colin and Gary jumped in playing 'Bolero' styles,but the styles kind of took a 'back seat' to vocal presentations - which were well done, by the way ...
4) While Donny 'ad-libbed' a Bolero style song, it sounded authentic enough to me...
5) DonM, Colin, and Gary performed songs that I would not think of if someone asked me to play a Bolero - and they all seemed to work ...
6) Fran played 'Besame Mucho' ("Be same" in his words ) which IS a song I would think of if asked for a Bolero ...

I guess this all shows the versatility of arrangers and their players ...

BTW - IMHO, from what I could hear, I preferred the Pa900 and SD7 styles to the others ... I enjoyed the sax sound on the SD7, which is an area I think the Pa900falls short except for the 'Soft Latin Sax' voice, but I was not thrilled with the brass sound ...

But then, what do I know ?!?

Tony I agree with some of what you said, ........although some of the KORG Saxes IMO do lack something you can go into sound editor and do some amazing things if one knows how to get the sound you like to a degree,....Korg arrangers are not OOTB units but they give the player the freedom to really get in there and make it their own for sure as it should be ..
