I also really enjoy Daniel Lanois's pedal steel work...some with Brian Eno, and, on his own albums. Very creative use of the instrument.
It's hardly "funk" but certainly not Country....more of a experimental nature...spacey kind of material.
Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, and Steve Howe, from the band Yes, are also lap and pedal steel players.
