Re: Ketron SD1000 piano sounds demo - 07/02/1312:54 AM
Thanks again Dan. What is your overall impression of the SD1000 and in particular how does it compare to the SD2 ? I am also looking forward to hear your demos on the TRUMPET sounds. Wonder if the famous Sweet Trumpet (SD5) can be found on this module. I am sure the drums, bass and sax will be outstanding anyhow. Thanks again for posting,

Re: Ketron SD1000 piano sounds demo - 07/05/1307:18 AM
Thank you Dan for all your efforts. But before you go down the whole routine, I guess what folks are above all interested in is guitars , brass and trumpet sounds. I must confess that so far I have not been too impressed by what I have heard but then again that is very personal and of course we owe you for doing all this demo-ing for us.
Re: Ketron SD1000 piano sounds demo - 07/05/1308:53 AM
John, please don't assume what people are 'above all' interested in. Personally, I could care less what the trumpets sound like! But a first class piano is the backbone of any keyboard. It is what we learn on (mostly), and probably the instrument we know what it SHOULD sound and play like the best. Then many of us learn on organs or accordions... So all of those HAVE to be as good as possible.
How many trumpet players here? LOL
Me, I'm probably most interested in whether the drums and bass are top notch. Without those nailing the rhythm section, what's the POINT of good brass or trumpet sounds (or anything else, basically!)?
Re: Ketron SD1000 piano sounds demo - 07/05/1310:48 AM
Every one and his interest That's why I will do them ALL ! Some SD1000 sounds are amazing and I imagine that they will sound very good in a production or in a style. Some other are... not so good... next...
The drums are very interessting too. Diki, be patient
Re: Ketron SD1000 piano sounds demo - 07/05/1305:56 PM
On the other hand, I love a first class trumpet sound, go nuts over great guitar sounds, and I'm really picky about some of the strings sounds, but I can always live with a mediocre piano if I have to. Different folks - different strokes!
Re: Ketron SD1000 piano sounds demo - 07/06/1307:59 AM
I think the guitar sounds sound very good. Accordions sound very good as well. There is so much competition out there and they all sound so great. I haven't seen any retailers having the Ketron SD-1000 in stock yet. Has anyone heard about a price yet? How did Dan.2000 get one to demo?
Re: Ketron SD1000 piano sounds demo - 07/06/1301:16 PM
I think that the issue is a generational one. In fairness, I can't remember the last hit that had a trumpet solo on it. You've pretty much got to go back to maybe Herb Alpert before you can remember a trumpet player having anything to do with modern music. Maybe 'Rise' was about the last thing it had any great importance on.
Piano, though... plenty of those still on the charts!

Hi Dan,
Just an in-between question. The specs say that the Ketron SD1000 sports "512 new orchestral sounds, 292 GM sounds " Are you videos using both the GM and the OTHER sounds in the demos or just the GM banks ? Thanks,

Hmmm, Diki mebbe you want to revisit that view
Quite a few modern tunes use trumpet, quite noticeably so..I cannot think of names of tunes right now, (but if you wanted proof I am sure I could spend a little time and find the names for you.
just coz the songs don't play on the US radio doesn't mean they are not being recorded, released and been popular...
Re: Ketron SD1000 piano sounds demo - 07/07/1312:24 PM
Well, tough to hear them if they don't play them here!
But, overall, in the big picture of things, there's probably a piano solo on at least 100X's as many songs as there is a trumpet! (at a VERY conservative estimate).
Despite the move to synths, it is still the backbone of any keyboard player's needed sounds. Admittedly, if you let the arranger always play the piano part, and do simple melodies over the top of it, you may not really care that much about it. But if you do anything BUT that, a great piano sound is quite possibly your #1 needed sound...

I don't know about that, Diki. I seem to hear far more guitar and tenor sax solos lately than I hear piano. Maybe it the difference in the music I listen to, though.
Re: Ketron SD1000 piano sounds demo - 07/08/1301:04 PM
Shakia's "Hips Don't Lie" is a fairly example of a hit song with a trumpet. Although that is a sample from a salsa song... Of course there lots current Latin stuff that features horns, especially trumpet and trombone.

Dan, in order to post anything, you'll first have to upload it to a host site, photobucket, youtube, boxnet, etc... Then just post a link to the location on that site and it will show up.
Re: Ketron SD1000 piano sounds demo - 07/09/1302:58 AM
Diki, with all due respect and I realize I was the one who started the subject of trumpets etc. why don''t we stick to the module itself and try and form an opinion of it on the basis of the tremendous amount of time and effort invested in these demos by Dan. He is putting Ketron itself to shame and imho most other companies. Short of auditioning it yourself in a shop or at home this is the nearest anyone will get to hearing a new module or keyboard. Therefor full kudos for Dan in doing so. As to the sounds itself it seems to me they are better and at least more versatile than on the SD2 ( I know Dennis might disagree) and retailing at approx. 400 euros it is a viable option for enlarging one's set up. You sure ain't gonna tip over due to its weight ! ( the guy who bought my Roland G70 last week, nearly changed his mind when he had to lift it into his car ) Like others I agree that it is a shame Ketron does not market some good motl keyboards to compete with the other three manufacturers. The Audya may be terrific but so is its pricetag and (I believe) its weight. Incidentally, on the Italian forum a guy who owns both the Audya , had the SD2 and now tried the SD1000,maintains that the SD1000 sounds are better than the SD2 and at least as good as those on the Audya...
Re: Ketron SD1000 piano sounds demo - 07/09/1310:57 AM
John... agreed.
So far, a mixed bag. But the drums sounded nice and punchy. At the moment, to my ears at least, the Ketron seems to shine in the same areas as the Roland's, and little to no better in its weaker areas. So, for me at least, little advantage to getting one.
Mind you, were those great drums audio loops, or just the built in kits..? My views on audio loops is well known, and only more so with a module.
My BK-9 comes in well under half the price of an Audya. I agree that Ketron need to step up and compete in the MOTL area. They have the technology, much of it unique. It deserves to trickle down more. Perhaps then a dealer network might be more interested in carrying them? That's basically my other main worry about Ketron in the US. You can't see them in the vast majority of the country, if you have a problem, there's no-one local to deal with any issues, and Italian after-sales service is historically notorious.
If this thing comes in at 400 euros in dollars (bit over $500) it shows that Ketron CAN go downmarket. Now they need a spinoff of the Audya in the PSR S950 price range and they might be a serious contender.
