Hi Tony

Is it just My Documents?
What technique do you use to create a new folder?
Are you sure it is not being created further down the list?
Is it just Local or Public folders as well?
Have you tried re-starting your computer?
What have you changed on the system since it was last working correctly?
Have you tried System Restore?

The more details you can give (And what you have tried) will make it easier to narrow the problem down.

The right click>NEW> does not even show the option of creating a new folder ...

No ... I cannot create a new folder anywhere - My Docs, Desktop, within other folders, etc.

I tried the 'right click' in My Docs as shown above, and also clicked on 'NEW FOLDER' in the top pane of the My Docs page ...

I have thoroughly searched the My Docs folder - it's not there ...

Local and Public

Restarted AND tried System Restore to no avail ...

I can't think of anything I might have changed ...

When I click on the 'NEW FOLDER' in the top pane of the My Docs page, the words 'NEW FOLDER' blink but nothing happens ...

I even did a 'search' for NEW FOLDER and anything I came up with is very old ...

thank you

Re: PC help needed - 04/19/13 04:41 PM

try doing it again and after you do it click on View- Refresh

Re: PC help needed - 04/19/13 04:42 PM

By the way, with W7, using System Restore for these things is akin to using a sledghammer to crack a walnut!

Also do you happen to have UAC turned off?

cass ... as I stated above, the right click doesn't even give me the OPTION of selecting NEW FOLDER ... it is NOT in the list of selectable items ...

What does turning off UAC do? ... I am signed on as the administrator ... doesn't that give me the rights to permit changes?

Re: PC help needed - 04/19/13 09:19 PM

UAC, or User Account Control has not much to do with admin rights...

There has been issues where a user has turned UAC off totally that has caused the issue you are having. If off, turn it back on to the default (2nd bar from the top) and then restart. This can sometimes fix this.

It was a well known issue in W XP (and early Vista), and Microsoft released a Hotfix for it...but it was supposed to be a non-issue in W7 and certainly not in 8.

As far as try again....open Windows Explorer right click in any white space in the right pane and create a new folder. Then at the top of the page select the View tab scroll to refresh and click it, if the new folder does not appear.

If the View tab is not there, at the top of the Explorer page under Organize, select Layout - Menu Bar.

Re: PC help needed - 04/20/13 12:56 AM

Hi Tony

The problem is known, (Although seldom does it occur) however if you follow the 2nd link that Cass has provided it should fix the problem.
NOTE: Print the instructions out and follow them to the letter. (Most importantly backup the registry)
You can undo the System Restore you did before you perform the repair if you wish.

If problem still persists, post again with the results

They say MAC does everything in a more logical way vs PC...
Only reason I'm hesitant is that some of my music editing programs don't have MAC versions....otherwise i would have to change and relearn new programs. I like the fact about less potential for Virus's, etc...

Tony try this...

First, please use System File Checker tool to troubleshoot this issue.

If the issue persists, import the following registry key and see if the issue can be resolved.

First, please refer to this knowledge base (KB) article to back up the registry key. After backing up the registry, please follow the steps below to import the registry:

1. Click Start, type Notepad in the Search bar and pres ENTER.

I don't want to start a Mac/PC debate. I am simply trying to offer a solution to the OP's problem. In over 20 years of Mac use, I have NEVER needed to even think about anything as complicated as Donny's post! My Mac's started up, did what they were supposed to, and stayed out the way.

BTW, Mac's aren't as prone to viruses and other malware not because they aren't worth it for hackers to try (though that might have been true back in the OS8-9 years) but because OSX is based on Unix, an enterprise level OS that was designed for security and flexibility. Plenty of hackers TRYING, these days. OSX's firewall and sandboxing are bombproof.

My point was that, a computer is a TOOL. Buy the most reliable tool you can get (the heck with the cost!) and all you ever worry about from that day on is the JOB, not the tool!

Re: PC help needed - 04/21/13 12:57 PM

A Mac is still less than most of our arrangers cost. And often, as vital to our job. Take a look at TCO (total cost of operation) and Macs come out quite competitive when you subtract everything you are currently spending, from virus and malware protection, to trips to the Geek Squad, to basic apps that come free with a Mac, to your own time (pretty valuable) spent pulling your hair out trying to get your PC to run at full speed.

And Jørgen... This was a Java vulnerability, not core OSX. From over a year ago (that's how far back you have to look), was promptly patched, and we haven't had one since (I never got it). And please... 600,000 Macs? How many MILLIONS of PC systems are currently infected with one sort of malware or another..? Currently...

All I'm saying is, all I ever hear from my PC friends is problem after problem. When was the last time you read anyone here with a Mac asking for help?

I would like to add one thing fwiw - I have been a PC user since MS-DOS 3, but if I did not have so much money tied up in Windows music software I would switch to a Mac in a heartbeat!!

I use windows ONLY out of necessity, not enjoyment of the OS I can assure you.

I have used MACS on a short term basis in the past and each time I came away so close to just doing it and hang the consequences it was scary!!

This post is just one of those 2cents moments wink

So if Mac would lower their prices they would be the leaders in consumer computer use if they are that much better...seems like a logical business decision and a financial plus for them.

It’s the opposite actually, Apple got there foot hold in first with the Mac, PCs got going later. (They had been out a number of years before they really got going thanks to Microsoft)

Apple was a closed system so they had full control and could charge as much as they could get away with, PCs allowed anyone in, thus a boatload of competition meant low prices and masses of software and hardware. Because of this competition PCs virtually saw off Apple, and if they had not been successful with the iPod they would probably now no longer exist.

Apple has now re-built the name for itself and once more people are happy to fork out a boatload of dosh to buy into the Apple brand. (Even though technically in a lot of areas they fall well short of their cheaper completion)

Things however are a changing so it will be interesting to see how they get on in the future. (They haven’t held the No.1 phone slot for ages)

And Mercedes, if they would only lower their prices, would be the best selling car on the planet..? LOL

Maybe diamonds ought to be cheaper, too... Then we could use them on the soles of our shoes!

Meanwhile, back to the topic ...
Without getting into a PC vs. Mac discussion - I can't comment on Mac 'cause I've never owned one - but I tried the link posted by cass ... I followed all the steps and after I got a message saying that the change to the registry didn't go through (for whatever reason it gave me) I went back to My Documents, clicked on the 'New Folder' in the top pane and VOILA!!! - there was a NEW FOLDER !!! repeated the action and there was a second NEW FOLDER ... did a right click, went to NEW and there at the top of the list was FOLDER ...
Don't know what I did or didn't do, but as long as it is working and nothing else is screwed up, I am fine with it ... now back to music stuff ... rocker

It's about money....nobody cares.....its a slow milking of human finances over and over again....in 10years...Mac & pc will be obsolete too.

Re: PC help needed - 04/22/13 03:41 PM

And so will all our arrangers! Strange, I'm not reading a lot about the slow milking of human finances where overpriced arrangers are concerned...

We'll happily pay $4k for a new Tyros, with a bare handful of new sounds and styles, but $1000 for a computer you'll NEVER have to ask desperately for help to make it do the most basic of things?

It's about money... REALLY?

Sorry, but I know of some that have paid that high (not everybody shops online at Frank's!), and we are quibbling over $500? Certainly, $3500 is nothing to sneeze at either!

The point being, despite the T4 being considerably more expensive than say a PA3X, you don't hear any T4 users seeming to mind to the point that they would change.

But slap an extra $500 on a computer (and there are Mac products like the iMac's and Mini's that can get down pretty close to PC prices as long as you don't buy bargain basement shoddy ones) and all of a sudden, it's 'milking the public' and you all keep using a system that gives you constant grief.

Me, I don't get it. How much is peace of mind and the ability to forget you are using a computer, and simply concentrate on what you want to do with it worth to you? Apparently, not very much!

Hi Tony,
happy to read you've now got it working.

Something drastically went wrong with my laptop the other day.
Fortunately I had a very recent full backup, so reloaded win7 & the backup, now working again.
Not that I knew what I was doing, so probably overkill , but I had nothing to lose. I keep all my files on SD cards ( not in the laptop) & all my programs on external hard drives.
So just a case of loading a few programs back in should the worst happen again.
A couple of years ago , I dropped my laptop, broke the hard drive, & to my horror the 6 month old back up drive that my laptop was backed up on , was faulty. Weeks of work finding & sorting all my programs & files from dozens of DVD roms.

I'd tried 2 or 3 earlier system restore points, ( latest to earliest) none worked for me either.

Don't know what I did or didn't do, but as long as it is working and nothing else is screwed up, I am fine with it ... now back to music stuff ... rocker

You have forgotten a few things though Diki

80% of computers in the world use Windows, whether at work or at play and people don’t like changing what they know?

People want free (Or to pay next to nothing) software of which there are 1000s for Windows, but very little for Mac.

Everybody has got plenty of mates that have Windows machines thus if they’re not sure how to do something in a program it’s just a quick call to find out, however with a Mac you are pretty much stuck with slow forums.

With the 1000s of different programs that people use (Many written in back rooms) it’s hardly surprising you get the occasional hiccup. (If the Mac was in the same position it would be no different)

Macs have been crafted to be a niche market (Not mass market) and this is why they can charge a fortune for very little, people just love paying for a designer label. (Try finding a Windows designer label)

As with keyboards, PCs, Macs, and anything else in this world, buy and use what you like...

And don't recommend a change, if it isn't all it is supposed to be?

Guys, let's get over the 'platform wars'. Nobody is being coerced into changing. But for some of you that might by now be fed up of things going wrong with their PC, there's no harm in telling of an alternative that allows you to forget about the computer completely, and just get down to WORK...

You are all welcome to stay where you are. Makes no difference to me one way or the other. But helping members here with suggestions to avoid future grief seems to be the right thing to do. Whether received well or not.

As I said... when was the last time anyone with a Mac said they needed help..?

This is not directed just at Diki by any means, but to ALL who responded AFTER Diki's comment about going to a MAC instead of a PC ...
SUGGESTIONS on this forum is what it is all about, and Lord knows, I have benefited by many of them (my new KORG Pa600 being a fine example) ...
BUT, I think there comes a time beyond the making of a suggestion and the posting of alternative views, when it just becomes a pissing match, and a contest to see who is going to have the last word ... between 30 - 35 posts after Diki's MAC suggestions were NOT about my PC problem, but about the pros and cons of PC vs MAC ... THAT is why I made my post above ...

IF I were in the market for a new computer system, and IF I was willing to spend the extra $$$ then a MAC might be a consideration ...
BUT, I am a guy who worked for the same company for 40 years (and am now reaping the benefits in retirement), I will be married to the same woman for 50 years come November (she is destined for Sainthood grin ) , I have lived in only two houses since 1973, and had owned only 2 technics keyboards since 1992, until I bought the KORG in January ... so one might say I am not too prone to 'change' ... rotfl
HOWEVER, I do appreciate the suggestions and hope they keep coming, but the 'pissing matches' not so much ...
