PSR s-950 a yamaha disappointment? - 09/08/12 07:24 AM

Yamaha what were you thinking? Everybody told you what they wanted in this new keyboard and all you gave us Vocal Harmony 2. Did we not deserve S Art 2 voicing, the new choir voices, Live drum kits like the tyros series, much more drum kits. I want to like it and i know that i havent heard any demos yet but this time it feels different...like they painted it black, improved the speakers, put some audio features and output and thats it. only a 100 new sounds. The psr s900 to s910 featured a much better sound variety upgrade. Will the normal styles sound better than the s910 ? They added only 3 megavoices...again dissappinting. The new s.art voices seem to be in the guitar area only. What do you guys think ? At this stage from everything you know about it are u happy or frustrated or undecided ?

it seems to me only s900 and possibly tyros 3 users and new buyers would buy it. s910 owners may not consider it a significant upgrade.....or am i wrong ?

No one says you have to buy it....there are many other arranger KB options on the market....in this economy manufacturers need to make a profit in some way and will go with their R&D had dictated for their customer base to earn a profit.....it might not be what you need at this time but for others it could certainly work for them, Yamaha Music division knows what they are doing or they wouldn't be in business.....a release of a so called new MOTL arranger KB will not change anything.....
just think of what we had just a few short years ago in technology?.....I'd say we have come a long way in a few short years with more changes coming year by year....what we have today will be ancient in the near future also...enjoy the moment and enjoy your making music.

I agree with Donny. Stop complaining and enjoy what you have. Nobody force you to buy the Yamaha S950. If you don't like it don't buy it.

Donny, I agree with you. Korg Pa600 in your signature already.. smile Way to go !!

Rolandfan, yes the SA2 voices, some SA voices, choir voices, live drums.. are missing !! But I think, once its available for a demo, we should try it out and then come to the "happy or frustrated or undecided" The specs, although not to your expectations, its still better than the 910 and very close to the T3. I am sure the sound coming out of the newly designed speakers with the T3 sound engine will be a decent step forwards.

And what`s more.. the audio features added, expansion capabilities, new speakers etc. would surely get you to try it out when it comes along. Till then.. "my gear is so good. I never knew it could do this too" moments will keep us happy for some time wink

Talking of choices.. we will have a lot to choose in the coming months... PA600, Pa3X cabinet, Krome from Korg, PSR S950,S750 from Yamaha , MidJPro from Ketron and to complete the list... Just get the feeling the supernatural TOTL arranger from Roland will make its way too smile

Unfortunately for me personally I dont like roland keyboards, and
I've tried the korg pa3x and the sounds and styles are average.
I found the yamaha psr s910 to be much better which I ended up
buying. I just expected more on the spec sheet since this is not
Called psr s920 or 930 but 950 indicating a BIG step up.
I will not purchase another brand and I will give the s950
A try when launched. Its just that on paper I'm disappointed
Already

Coincidently I found the s910 sounds and styles to be a
Vast improvement over my old s900

That's true smile but I guess its because I'm a member since 2002
And back then the roland g1000,
Va7 etc were my favourites...
Everything except my user name changed when the first tyros came
Out wink

I agree. I am very disappointed.

I play the S910 professionally, and I'm kind of married to the Yamaha platform. I'm going to upgrade because if it costs me $1200 to upgrade two keyboards and I do 1200 shows in the next three years, then it costs me $1 per show to have two new keyboards that for two years are covered under warranty (manufacturer and credit card extended warranty).

I'm disappointed for many of the same reasons:

1) No Live! drums
2) No Real Brush kit
3) No additional DSP blocks
4) No additional buttons
5) Basically, the same OS as the PSR3000 that came out 8 or 9 years ago. Why not create a way for the keyboard to search or suggest that you search for registration paths that are missing?
6) Only 5 new Mega! Voices
7) No SA2 voices
8) No choir SA voices
9) The buttons crammed together more with a bigger chance to hit the wrong button
10) A 64mb expansion slot that is good for one expansion pack at a time, and you have to turn the keyboard off to switch
11) Audio Drums on just 25 styles
12) The probability that the Audio Drum styles are in a closed format that can only be played from the onboard memory or the Expansion slot

Things I like

1) Over 90 additional onboard styles
2) The better speakers
3) The upgraded vocal harmonizer
4) I like that it has new sounds and the audio drums, expansion board but Yamaha apparently did not make a generous overall improvement.

It looks like they raised the price and then severely limited the new features to so that musicians buy the T4 instead.

Can someone confirm if you can use S. Art. voices in a custom style, as in the tyros 4?

I think this was one of the new features of the tyros 4.

In the manual (of s950) it says you can use any sounds except organ flutes and some other categories (with no mention of s.art voices not being allowed) in a style

Also, how soon will these keyboards be out? can't wait!!!
