Who Needs an Arranger anyway - 07/03/12 07:20 AM

Can anyone play one of these, does anyone know what USA group used one in one of their hits.

Notice how he switched it on and it kicks in, not like the T4 20 seconds to load up. Love to hear someone playing Real Country music on one .... violin

Tony,

I played one of the new ones last time I was in Halifax...it was an Etherwave Standard model.

You really have to have a good sense of pitch, and lots of patience, to play one.

You can also get one with MIDI so you can use it to control your arranger or synthesizer.

Ian,

If I played one it would be like strangling a cat headphone

I have a Theremin, assembled from a kit which is still available from Paia. It's easy to assemble; even I could do it.

Actually, when I was in California, I saw the Beach Boys, and the lead singer was playing a machine that sounded like a Theremin on "Good Vibrations", but was played using what looked like a thin lap steel bar. It was played moving the bar horizontally, rather than the UP and Down hand method used by Brian in his demonstration.

Of course, many Roland synths have a similar controller built in. I particularly like the one on my SH 201 synth.

What a neat piece of music history!

Tony, you'd ROCK on one!

Russ,

Only if I can get the sheet music for it. duel Brian Wilson looks in a state in the video, great pity what's happened.

Russ, the instrument you are referring to is an Electro-Theremin which was probably much easier to use "live"...from what I understand, the studio recordings were also done with the Electro-Theremin.

Below is the intro of "Good Vibrations" with the Electro-Theremin being used.

There is more info on the Electro-Theremin here:

You have a sharp eye, and an even sharper ear. cool2

Good find.

(P.S). Tony, Brian Wilson came thru Lexington last year. He had dinner at the country Club I work regularly after his performance at the Opera House. I knew him in the mid 60's when I was a "surf guitar dude".

He didn't recognize me (that's understandable) or recall many of the players, venues or other notable places, people or events from the era. He was more disoriented than he was in the attached footage.

What a shame...

Just saw the "Scorpions" in Reno. Sacramento band "Tesla" opened, and used a Zep Theremin on a song, "Edison's Medicine" (Theremin is at 2:44)
