...displaying .doc files on an arranger???? - 11/17/11 01:41 PM

This question will surely expose my lack of technical knowledge … many of our keyboards and modules can display lyrics as ‘text’ files, what would it take or would it even be possible for these same instruments to display Word/ ‘doc’ files?

Hi

Sorry, but text only!
Doc files are not possible as they are text + formatting code

Change doc files to text software:
Text Formatter at http://www.jososoft.dk/yamaha/software/textformat/index.htm

A tedious job...

If you remember the old DOS days of PCs, you could rename those .doc files to .txt files fairly easily, and do them in a batch. You can probably still do this using the Promt Window of Windows XP, but I'm not sure about Vista and Windows7.

Doc files were pretty much a Microsoft format for MS Word for Windows.

Good Luck,

Doc files relate to Microsoft Word and virtually all office programs (From any manufacture) can open them, as over the years they have pretty much become the world standard for office documents.

To convert them to text, (Note you will lose all the formatting and special features) open them in any Word processor (Open Office is a free one if you don’t have the common Microsoft Word) then choose the Save As option from the file menu, when the save box opens look for the box (It will normally be a drop down menu) that allows you to choose how to save it, select the Text option, click save and you are done.

NOTE: just changing the extension from doc to txt will not work, as you will just get garbled results. (If you want to view the extensions select the Tools menu (In any Windows explorer box (Not Internet Explorer) and choose folder options followed by the view tab, there you will find the option to display them.

NOTE: Your keyboard may require you to change the text to a font that it understands

Hope this helps

There is a batch conversion function in MS Word that lets you convert an entire folder at a time. Not sure if OO has it, but probably.
Be aware of special line length requirements if you are using a Yamaha keyboard. Most other brands now have word wrap in their displays.

Hi

Word can save in pure text format.

However often in doc format chord/lyrics text files are formatted using proportional font.

This formatting will result in alignment problems between chord symbols and text when the files were save in pure text format.

Check this problem in the images at http://www.jososoft.dk/yamaha/software/textformat/index.htm
