I know a number of you are also photographers, but a month or 2 ago, one of SZ members posted that he had another hobby and also posted a link to his photos, not sure who it was? Maybe Glen? I'd like to find that link.

I think it may have been me - but not sure. Anyway, photography is a hobby of mine. For what it's worth, here's a link:

Russ, thanks for the offer. I recently purchased a entry level Canon t2i Dslr camera, I'm getting my feet wet trying to learn everything I can about it. At some point I may send some questions your way.

Gary, As it turns out it was Coaster Tim who I was thinking about who made the post, but I'm always open to seeing what work others are doing. I'm on the low end of the totem pole as far as camera skill is involved.

Re: OT: Who posted their other hobby photograhy? - 02/07/11 01:05 PM

I used to be a serious photographer, but have gotten lazy since the improvement of digital cameras. I had a darkroom in my house and made my own prints, etc. Had a Hasselblad, a Mamiyaflex and several SLRs with various lenses. Still have a couple somewhere. It's easy to get really good photos now. Still, there is a higher degree of artistic photography that takes more thought, effort and gear than I'm willing to do now.
I find myself taking very few pictures these days. Still appreciate seeing what you youngsters are doing though!

Stephen, ever need a model, I have the looks AND experience. I'm in high demand, mostly at police stations, airport detention centers and the likes. I work fast and usually it takes no more than three shots a photo-session. My personal handpaintings are included. They usually ask how how I charge and I tell them cash is fine but apparently they don't do business with the banks as I do. Still, they must seem very impressed with me as they never fail to include a free housing/meals ticket.

Re: OT: Who posted their other hobby photograhy? - 02/07/11 07:15 PM

I've been a photographer since the early 1970s, a time when I wrote my first magazine article for Outdoor Life. Back then you couldn't sell an article without accompanying photos, and they had to be the best quality or your article was rejected by the editor(s). I still write a monthly magazine column and still sell photos with the articles. The big difference is I no longer need a darkroom, my SLRs are all sitting in drawers and have become antiques, and the film processors no longer process 35mm color slides. I have a couple of aging digital cameras, the resolution is only 2.1-mega-pixels, but the 20/1 lenses do an outstanding job for outdoor and wildlife photography.

Cheers,

Taike, I have seen your photo on the wall in the lobby of my local US Post Office of the most wanted law breakers. Now I know where I knew your face from. I was a little confused since your "alias name" was posted under the photo. laugh

Gary, now another reason to address you as Professor! Nice photo.

Don/Gary darkrooms too! I'd call that very serious hobbyists/pro. I have an old Minolta SLR with a variety of lenses, when point and shoot digitals were released I never touched the SLR again. Back in December I wanted to get a little deeper into photo editing using Aperture software from Apple. It came with a sample library of photos that are outstanding, seeing those photos were the bug that bit me. Since then I purchased a used entry level Canon Rebel 2ti DSLR. Takes nice photos, all I need to do now is learn to use it the way it should be. If you haven't checked out Coaster Tim's photos it's worth a visit to his site, he's got some nice work posted there.

Hey Steve,

I'm into photography also. I've actually sold my photos to the publishing houses before there was even a "Stock Photo" concept in the industry. LOL.

I'm currently shooting with a Canon EOS 7D camera and hang out frequently on the Digital Photography Review forums learning and sharing Digital photography tips and tricks.

Al,

Whoa rocker Canon EOS 7d cool! The guy I bought the T2i from graduated to the 7d. He gave us a tour of both when my wife and I went to purchase the t2i, fine piece of equipment that 7d. Nice you made some $$ selling your work.

I've been scouting around forums, I'll have to check out your link.

Re: OT: Who posted their other hobby photograhy? - 02/08/11 09:23 AM

Steve,

I used to be a Nikon fan, but fell out of love when things went digital. I had the original Canon EOS Rebel 300D for many years before finally getting the 7D early in 2010. With so many life changes in 2010, we thought we should have a great camera to capture them all. The 7D captures great HD Video as well so it's a combo Video / Still Camera.

I'm dying to do some traveling now to capture some great pictures. You'll love the T2i. You might want to check out Adobe LightRoom to catalog and process your photos. It's a great little piece of software.

I've also had a long lasting interest in photography, with my favorite camera being a Minolta SRT 201 ... I got to take some great shots with that in full manual mode ... Unfortunately it was stolen from my hotel room while on a business trip ... I replaced it with a Nikon FE2 which was also very nice, but I think I did a better job with the Minolta ...
Then came digital ... I now use a SONY DSC H50 ... nice, feels like a camera, but it is NOT an digital SLR, which perhaps I may get someday ...

Some of you guys have had some heavy duty hardware ... I envy that ... wink

Tony, small world! I have a Minolta SRT 202, very similar to the 201. It's a keep sake now as it belonged to my late father. That camera always did a nice job with photos, but haven't used it in probably 9 or 10 years.

Re: OT: Who posted their other hobby photograhy? - 02/09/11 07:34 AM

Al,

The fox decided to take a nap in the snow right in front of my living-room window last winter. It snoozed most of the day, and even returned the following day for a nap. The sun was very bright, temperature was down to nearly zero, but I guess the dense fur kept it quite cozy while basking in the sun. The wildlife in my yard is beyond belief, and there are times when looking out any window of my home I can see some really neat critters. Here's another shot when the fox woke up.

Cheers,

Great shots Tony;

They look like they are eying your prized landscaping plants!

In New York, they would eat anything in sight; sort of like rodents. With a lot of snow on the ground, they would even eat the pine trees.

Re: OT: Who posted their other hobby photograhy? - 02/09/11 10:27 AM

Tony, nice photo. I'm assuming that's your backyard? I hear there are a ton of deer roaming that area in EG, I know someone who their entire landscape eaten by a family of deer. Hope you haven't had that experience. BTW did you use your digital or your Minolta?

Re: OT: Who posted their other hobby photograhy? - 02/09/11 12:48 PM

Yes, that's the 'backyard' and they have often done some unasked for 'pruning' ...
This group has been around for 3 of the last 4 days and I am a little concerned they might get TOO comfy out there ...

Steve these were taken with the digital, just this morning ... I haven't used the 35mm for some time, unfortunately ...

Re: OT: Who posted their other hobby photograhy? - 02/09/11 08:20 PM

Great shots, Tony. It's amazing just how close they will come to the house when they're hungry. The deer keep my shrubs pruned most of the year now. I allow hunting on my property, and between my next door neighbor and a friend they usually bag 7 to 10 a year, which ironically, is not sufficient to keep the herd from growing out of control. We also have a pretty good flock of wild turkey that shows up from time to time as well--especially after a heavy snow.

Cheers,

Andrea,

I'm a little late posting, but first nice to hear from you. Great photos I particularly like the ones from Asia and Africa. The one from the USA "Lone Cypress" I've heard that is one the most photographed trees in the world.

Tony, Deb has some family who live about 3 miles from you off Carr's Pond Road, they are on 18 acres about 15 are cleared. Not sure what their front yard looks like now, but for the last few years a dawn and dusk you could regularly see a family of deer grazing on their property. I also remember when the deer ate about $10,000 worth of shrubbery from the property.

Thank you, Steve. I came back to the Carmel/Monterey area a few years ago and saw that the Lone Cypress was in poor conditions indeed, to the point that I didn't feel like taking another picture, but preferred to keep the memories I had from my previous journey instead.

I talked with him last night. He said when he took the photos the cats were still a bit small and have grown quite a bit since then. He lives in the mountains of northern California and sees mountain lions regularly. They're mainly nocturnal and they're usually more afraid of you than you are of them--but that's not always the case.

Yep, definitely a beautiful part of California where Poz lives.

Though I live in the urban SF bay area (Berkeley), believe it or not, mountain lions have even been spotted here as well.
