Poll:Member Age, Location, Arr Brand, Music Played

Ok Gang, here's my revised and corrected edition of the earlier Poll I posted just a few hours earlier, in which I had by mistake, left out a couple of critical poll 'selection' choices. If you haven't participated in this group of polls before, please do so now, and if you've already voted, please vote again now, as every member's active participation in the following Six Polls will help us further understand the needs and interest of our membership at large. Thanks in advance for your participation.

Gospel music seems to be a genre that a good number of members play.

Poll: "Sacred/Gospel" Genre Arranger Player?

Scott, I find your demographics rather odd. The results would tell me nothing, especially because of the "other" countries. Why name a few but categorize the rest as "others"?

And since no one seems to have noticed, the United States, Canada and Mexico are the only countries that constitute North America. Where does North America (other) fit in?

The Middle East is part of Asia. But then why omit Central Asia, South-East Asia and the Far East? After all, these are the main regions of Asia.

Brazil is part of South America. What does warrant it being called separately from the rest of SA. Is it because it's the only Portuguese speaking country in SA?

Australia and New Zealand are part of Oceania.

Germany, Italy and the Netherlands are only a couple of member states that constitute the EU. Why name only these three?

Russia and the United Kingdom are both part of Europe as are the EU members. Again, why the need for separate categories?

Africa is ...well, just Africa. Yet, it being '"just" Africa will give me a far better picture than the rest of demographic poll. At least I won't have to figure out what the "other" are.

Sorry, Bruno, but I doubt it'll give you a better idea of who I am, other that I am from somewhere "other".

I refrain from voting as it makes me feel stateless or like a refugee. Were it MY poll, I would at least take the time to name ALL nations of the world.

Stop please!!!!! You really are being a bit oversensitive. It simply mentions the major countries that the music equipment manufacturers market in. And then Scott offered some "others" choices to cover other countries that weren't referred to specifically. By no means would I even want someone making a poll that included every darned country in the world individually. Keep it real please.

If you feel you need to refrain from voting then that absolutely is your choice and I respect that.

Though over 240 people have now viewed this thread, so far, only 40+ people have actually voted. Because poll results merely reflect the results of those who voted, the more members willing to participate, the more accurate the results will be of our SZ membership at large. I'm hoping more members will take a couple of minutes to vote because I too think the results will be not only 'fun to see the results and comparisons', but interestingly informative as well.

Question: Nigel, does the thread "views" number reflect everyone (including non-member forum lurkers) that viewed the thread, or only members that are actually logged in?
Perhaps this may account for the huge 'views' vs 'number of voters' differential.

I am very sure Views is everyone publicly that sees the page so includes non-members. That would definately be the difference.

Nigel, based on your reply, I'm going to guess that the number of votes so far loosely reflects the number of actual members that regularly log on and participate on the forum. By the end of the coming week (Feb 5th) I would expect everyone interested in participating in this poll would have had a chance to cast their votes, so I'll post and attempt to summarize the results then.

Wow, I actually was able to leave out the phrase: "that said". Chas should be pleased

... all 'that said', perhaps the "OTHER" category could have included the ability to state what the 'other' is ...
BTW ... my age group selection 60 - 69 changes to 70 - 79 in April ...

Tony, unfortunately the poll creation set up does't support this, but people are certainly welcome to provide any 'other' detail, as you did, in a thread reply.

Well there are actually more than 2 female forum members as I know there are at least a few on the Technics forum but probably not all of them have voted in this poll. I am guessing one of these votes was Rikki. But we always knew most members were male. It just means our female members are extra special.

Really hope this pole will be of interest and helpful to all forum members.
I have already discovered that wherever we are in the World,musically we have so much in common to share.
Thanks Scott for initiating the survey and I look forward to discussing the resulting findings.

I would add, that Taike post which I consider to be a valid assessment ,when generalisations are being used to achieve a specific end, I can also fully understand and see where he is coming from.

Although his comments may not be in line with the objectives of this survey,it is worth bearing in mind these sensitivities for the future,

Scott, I teach graduate level perception research using SASS and SPSS-X analysis techniques. There are probably some issues with the science here...but it's NEAT!


People need to recognize that it's a simple, fun snapshot
of the folks here. There are tests for the statistical significance (*R value, or accuracy) of responses based on total views vs responses, total responses vs membership, and lots of other details. Those values may not be great, but, so what?

These are real responses from real members and, "warts and all", the first real data, other than total numbers available in an easy to understand, entertaining format.

While I appreciate your sensitivity .... do you really think anyone here has the patience and time to create a poll with 100s of countries. God help them if they missed one. That would be insane and really wouldn't achieve anything useful at all. I wouldn't even want to see someone try it. That's why I was critical of the suggestion to do that. It would be totally pointless.

I guessed you were most probably the other voter but didn't want to say that in case I was wrong. We all love you Elizabeth. You arranger girls keep us guys grounded.

So are you enjoying the new forum software and the extra features it provides?

Scott, This was a great idea. It answered many questions that I have asked myself like, “What percentage of keyboard players are still using a Technics keyboards”? And, “What type of music is being favored”?
I feel the people who did not post are the same people who normally do not share.

Ok folks, it's now been over a week since I initiated this poll so thought it a good time to attempt to make sense of the results gathered so far,
but because the results appear to 'speak for themselves' I've decided instead, to provide important factual data on the Synthzone Membership itself,
which I've obtained from the Synthzone forum's "USER" list statistics. All figures shown are approximate and rounded off:

Total Members (from 1999 to present): 31,675
Members with more than 05 posts: 2,525
Members with more than 10 posts: 1,625
Members with more than 500 posts: 150
Members with more than 1000 posts: 75
Members with more than 2000 posts: 50
Members with more than 2500 posts: 25

The total number of member poll respondents (so far) is 75, so my guess is these primarily include the most active participating members, members with more than 1000 posts (see above).

Based on this, as well as the poll results, I'm really interested to hear what kind of conclusions other members might have to make about our membership as a whole.

I found the nitpicking amusing since that is exactly what a university faculty meeting is like. I participated in too many to count. Retirement is much more fun.
