Great find! If you lived around here, you would love it, because it is the official State Song of Louisiana. It was a major hit for former Governor Jimmy Davis.
My wife sings it every weekend to our 3-year-old grandson too, just as her grandmother sang it to her. Except better.

Hi Don, unfortunatelly i live in NYC for 14 years, i came here from Europe.
The music from Luisiana is probably one of the best in the states, a lot of great artists...
Starting with my #1 favorite: Jambalaya...lol.
The Voyager series was actually the first time i heard this song...and it started from there.

And your wife is i guess how old, over 40-50...and her grandma sang it to her...thats
over 40 years ago...so how old is this song? I know the history of Jambalaya but not this one.

"You Are My Sunshine" is a popular song first recorded in 1939. It has been declared one of the state songs of Louisiana as a result of its association with former state governor and country music singer Jimmie Davis. The song is copyright 1940 Peer International Corporation, words and music by Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell.[1] According to a 1990 article by Theodore Pappas, the original song was written by Oliver Hood

Ray Charles' version is my all time favourite of this tune.

Sorry, but under threat of death, I'm not at liberty to say how old my wife is. However, she was born in 1959, 16 years to the day after I was born.

Jimmy Davis is regarded as a semi-god around here. We have a bridge over the Red River that connects Shreveport and Bossier City named after him.
I am not a native of Louisiana, but I'm told that when he was running for governor he toured the state with a flatbed trailer on which he and his band performed at every city or town or crossroads they came to.
It is said to be one of the primary reasons he was elected.
Maybe I could do that with an arranger, generator and my trusty 1997 Silverado pickup.
