Yes James good pickup...

Following on from Scotts comments on another thread, and also from Stephens, this iPad is looking better and better. Now with MIDI capability...

I may have to re-investigate one and replace my XT2 touch notebook..

Thanks people, all good info

James thanks for the link. Dennis, my expectations were never all that high for the iPad. Originally, my wife and I bought them to use as e-book readers as well as to use for e-mail and browsing the web. Turns out it's so much more than I imagined.

Cool Stephen...My only issue now, after having done a bit more research over the last twenty minutes or so, is the screen is too small.

At only 9.7" diagonally measured, it has a lot smaller screen space than my lappy at 12" diagonally..

Be good for books though, I can see that, but for my charts, not big enough...bummer, what a cool bit of gear though.

Dennis that is the one negative the screen really could be a bit larger.

Nice find looks like this has potential and the screen is 6 by 11 inches, weighs just over 2 pounds. Very cool

Engadget review says that it has low battery life and needs more development to become the next consumer toy.

Hi Dennis & Stephen:

For stage work (as well as in the studio) I actually prefer the 9.7" screen because the slim compact size is never an audience distraction when performing. Read details + pics here:

Engadget haven't reviewed a production model. I saw their review of a prototype months ago but nothing from them since it was released.

The feedback on the actual production models is extremely positive from end users.

Check it out, it's pretty darn cool.

Re: Apple adds midi to the iPad - 11/12/10 07:55 AM

As the iPads been on the market nearly a year, It's actually surprised me that it's taking so long for even one iPad competitor to even come out the gate yet.

This has given iPad a significantly huge devoted user base + software app advantage. Any competitor will have to play catch up quick.

Of the competitors, I find the Galaxy Tab the most formidable challenger, but I personally prefer not to be tied to a phone contract with a larger tablet like device.
I prefer reserving a much smaller easily pocketable smartphone for that. I find the iPad size idea for books, mags, pdf manuals, lyrics and lead sheets, email, skype voice, and internet media consumption, including coveniently reading and posting here on sz from just about anywhere I am during the day.

Good news! for iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch owners:

OS 4.2 was finally released TODAY, of which among other critical new features, now includes full midi software implementation . I'm excited because this now gives app developers the tool to develop 'midi sequencing apps' and perhaps even some kind of 'midi-arranger' for the iPad now. Can't wait to see which developer will be first to announce an app like this.

Thanks for the heads up Scott...Have you loaded it yet? Any issues? I have the first gig with mine on Saturday, so I don't want to be stuffing anything up this close...

Yes.

No, except that it took ages (3+ hrs ) for iTunes to create the new iPad OS auto backup files on my PC. One OS 4.2 annoyance is tthat he screen rotation lock (physical) switch function has been changed to activate vol mute. Screen lock must now be activated within the touch screen. That said, a worthwhile upgrade to gain the ability to run multiple apps concurrently, and of course, midi support. . - Scott

Cheers m8, thanks....I take note of the 3 hours..I will plan better when I do it because of that.

Yeah, I agree, can't wait to see what apps are released now

A couple of nights ago my backup was taking every bit of 3 hours, I started it late in the evening. Short story I read on a support forum, that one of the apps I run Zinio an app for electronic magazines can slow it down. I had about 30 copies of issues of MacWorld and PC World Loaded. I uninstalled Zinio, the back up ran in about 15 minutes, then the new software took another 20 minutes. Last night I added back Zinio and downloaded the most recent copies only of those magazines.

Looks like age is no barrier to the iPad!
