Yamaha PSR-S910 Styles

I'm thinking of replacing my ancient Yamaha keyboard with a PSR-S910. I've read through the 910 user and reference manuals but I can't find anything about adding styles from the internet. I'm guessing that the process is something like this:

1) Install a USB storage device on the PSR.
2) Connect the PSR to the internet.
3) Download styles.
4) Copy the styles over to the appropriate style preset category (or do they have to go into the USER style category)?

I assume that the styles are now stored in internal non-volatile memory, right?

Is that how it works? Or can the styles be downloaded directly into style storage? How many new styles can one add on the PSR-S910?

Registration is free, and there's a wealth of information available to you.

BTW...your downloading process is correct, except for the last part...you must save the style in the user section of the S910, or you can leave it on the USB flashdrive...your choice.

Frans: I have the PSR-510. It was a Christmas from my sister. I've played it a lot and it still works fine. I've played many expensive electronic organs whose keyboards were in bad shape after 3 or 4 years so I'm impressed that the inexpensive 510's keyboard still plays like new after nearly 15 years.

You can store as many styles as you would like. It depends on the size of your flash or hard drive connected to the S910. However, the internal memory can't hold much because it is only about 3 Mb if I am not mistaking. But again, I don;t see a need to store anything internaly since the USB flash drive us so much more convenient.

I had a PSR-510...great little keyboard...the styles were very good for the time.

I have about 50 styles in my PSR-S910's user memory, plus two registration banks...the user area isn't huge, but I find it just fine for storing the styles and registrations I use a lot.

The 510 was way ahead of its time. It had some great styles that were tailored for specific songs. I remember one had the riffs for "I Feel Good", and another was perfect for Working on the Chain Gang. There was a perfect Bo Diddly style too.
I held on to it for quite a while even after I changed to 630 or whatever was next because of those styles.

I'm pretty sure the internal styles from the PSR-510 are available through some of the forums (the PSR-1700/2700 had similar styles), and the optional style disk library for those instruments is also around as well.

As far as I know they've been converted/adjusted for the newer instruments.

Yes they are Ian, I've got them and organised them and mos sound pretty spot on.

The PSR-510 was a huge leap forward to the PSR-500 which was my second ever keyboard.

Yes, I had the PSR-500 as well...it wasn't in the same league as the 510...it didn't have as many style parts (it had only drums, bass and three other parts), and it would not read bass inversion (on bass) chords....it did have some great AWM sounds, and I remember one of the styles, New Age, was excellent....I used it to do a radio ad.

The PSR-1700 was quite a bit like the 510, but added the disk drive instead of using the 4 page/panel setups...I think a lot of the styles were very similar.

It was with those products that Yamaha finally started catching up to Roland's awesome (for the time) E-series.

With the exception of a few models, all of the styles on previous models will play on the S-910. You'll find thousands upon thousands of those styles at www.psrtutorial.com as well as the forums listed above.

I'm trying to figure out how one uses styles directly from USB external storage on the 910. Does it take more button presses and take longer to bring up a style from a USB device than it does internal styles? Can USB styles be used in registration memory?

I finally ordered the PSR-S910 online. It will be delivered today. I couldn't find any dealer in the Bay Area that had the PSR-S910 on the show floor so I'm buying the 910 purely on spec and forum comments.

Guitar Center in Santa Clara said they did but when I got there they said they would take it out of the box for me to play after I bought it. They did have the Tyros 3 out which I played for awhile. Very nice.

I also bought an FC-4 sustain pedal (I don't like my FC-5 .. it keeps moving around), an FC-7 volume pedal, a headset mic, a 16GB USB flash memory stick, and some cables.

This should keep me busy for awhile.

When you get your S910 read up on registrations. You will use your flash drive to store all your styles via registrations. The onboard memory is very limited.

Thanks for the advice! The S910 is a lot more complicated than my 15 year old PSR-510! However, it is amazing to me how close they have stayed to the original design and layout over the years. When I tried out the Tyros 3 I could immediately start playing it, selecting voices, styles, variations, etc., almost as if it were a PSR-510 with extra buttons, LCD display, and more realistic voices.
