What keyboard do you regret selling?

What keyboard do you regret selling? - 02/22/10 09:03 AM

Out of all the keyboards i've ever owned, my biggest regret was selling the Korg i30, I still wished I owned that although i'd never of bought a PA1x if i still had the i30 but that isn't such a bad thing.

What's your biggest regret if you have one?

Danny.

Hindsight is always 100%. Looking back, I regret selling my Technics KN7000. Actually, I regret trading my KN6500 in for the KN7000. The 6500 was really special.

At first I did regret big time I sold the KN5000, but as Technics closed down, I thought
it was time to move on. Now I regret even more that I sold the SD1 to make room for the
Audya. That story most of you probably know.... no Audua here so far.

Out of the all my keyboards, I would say that my Ketron X1 and the SD5 are the one I regret selling. I really liked the X1, the sounds & styles were just great, circa 1999.

I regret selling my G-70's, both of them, at different times. Believe it or not, I might look for another soon. I love that board, but the weight and bulk are just too much for me to tote around. If I could get past that...

OTOH, I really miss my Farfisa Combo Compact and Leslie 145. I did a lot of damage with that classic.

I'm sure you're talking about arranger keyboards, but...

Not in any particular order:
Minimoog (s/n 10)
Yamaha CS60
Korg Trinity Pro
Generalmusic Genesys Pro S (say, that's an arranger)
Mellotron (2 actually)
Korg MS20
Hammond BCV (best sounding Hammond I have ever heard)
Kurzweil K-250
Clavinet D6
Pianet
Wurlitzer EP200
and more that are not coming to mind at the moment.

Danny I hear you re the i30. I have kept my is35, which is basically the same thing with a lighter plastic case and no touch-screen. i don't use it on gigs any more, because i prefer
the keybed, most sounds, and 76 keys on my Roland E60. but the styles and rhythms are far
better on the Korg is-35, and there is no comparison re the OS..the Korg is hands-down better OS playing live in every conceivable way.

Re: What keyboard do you regret selling? - 02/22/10 01:04 PM

I miss my Yamaha CS60, my ESQ1's (had two), my ARP Odyssey, my Oberheim Xpander, my B3 and Vox organs (much got left in England when I emigrated), Wasp, even my two Mirage's (you needed two when all they had was 128kb RAM!), but the only arranger I now regret selling is my G1000, because of the damn Chord Sequencer..!

But I'm a packrat, I still have my old DX7, Ensoniq SQ2, original Korg CX3, in cases untouched for years. And most of what I no longer have was never sold, just given away when I moved on... I suppose I could always ask for them back!

One classic I'll NEVER sell is my K2500, fully loaded. Still the heart of my studio, along with the G70 (well, both G70's!). Even I'm not that stupid!

Re: What keyboard do you regret selling? - 02/22/10 01:16 PM

I don't miss any arrangers I had in the past, as the new ones are generally superior to the old...plus, nowadays, a mid-range arranger can do far more than a TOTL of only a few years ago.

Keyboards I would regret selling?

Perhaps my old B-3 and two 147RV Leslies...I sold my Roland Jupiter 8 several years ago, but was luckily able to buy it back in the same pristine condition...it even had the same patches I put in the memory banks.

All the other sounds I may use like Wurly, Rhodes, and DX-7 type sounds (and even a couple of great B-3 sims) are already on my Yamaha arranger and realistic enough to preclude going back to vintage gear and it's upkeep and maintenance.

My biggest regret was not a keyboard but a synth my Roland XP 60.
Posted by: Diki

Re: What keyboard do you regret selling? - 02/22/10 01:48 PM

Why isn't an XP60 a keyboard? As long as they have keys, ALL instruments are keyboards... synths, organs, pianos, arrangers, WS's, even keytars...!

Maybe accordion is the only exception, one doesn't often refer to that as a 'keyboard', even though it has one

Re: What keyboard do you regret selling? - 02/22/10 03:05 PM

Some really cool and interesting responses, it’s nice to sometimes reminisce.

I have to admit to still having a very soft spot for the GEM WX2 also because it was that keyboard that made me deviate from the norm and my first real experience in breaking the tradition of sticking with Yamaha for so long. The WX2 sounded so powerful in comparison to anything I’d heard at the time, however, the problem I found with the WX2 was that it was very limited, I think it only had 64 styles and 300 odd sounds, albeit very good but it wasn't many and soon had to rely on those extra and expensive discs from GEM’s software library.

I also didn't like the way the WX2 played the standard midi files but of course it was a completely different story when playing GEM's own music discs, it just blew anything away I'd ever heard at the time. As much as I loved the keyboard I soon became a little under whelmed because I felt I had bought a Karaoke machine and that was driven by the huge catalogue of discs that GEM were releasing and the need to wanting to acquire them all, this took me further away from what I wanted from a keyboard so I was very excited when GEM announced the WK series but unfortunately the WK’s didn’t do it for me at all, I was disappointed with how thin and lifeless it sounded, a watered down version of the WX. Still had fun with the WK8 though but I always knew that I wasn't going to keep it for much longer. I then exchanged it for the i30 and it felt like a huge leap forward to everything I’d owned before.

Here’s a list of all the keyboards I’ve owned:

Yamaha PSS 790 - My first ever keyboard mid 80’s and have it somewhere!
Yamaha PSR 500
Technics KN 800
Yamaha PSR 410
Yamaha PSR 510
Yamaha PSR 520
Yamaha PSR 620
Yamaha PSR 8000
GEM WX2
GEM WK8
Korg i30
Ketron X1
Korg PA60
Korg PA80
Korg PA1X – Currently Own
Yamaha Tyros 3 – Currently Own

I wished I had owned a Technics or Roland TOTL board but as you can see from the list I tended to stick with what I felt comfortable with, I already felt a bit weary when I went changed to GEM but I am glad of the experience and at one point was very tempted with the Genesys but glad I went with Ketron and maybe I would have kept the X1 if it didn't continually break down!

Thanks for reading.
Danny.

PS, I forgot to mention what first got me into keyboards was really when my dad brought an organ:

Now that takes me back!!!

well..since we are also talking cars....

I regret selling the 1969 Chevelle SS396..I purchased new off the showroom..This was the High Performance model..It ran in the 11's right out of the showroom...I only had it for 6 months..around 5,000 miles (mostly racing miles)...How about the factory gave me a 5 year, 50,000 mile warranty..

The SS swallowed a valve...blew out 4th gear....and destroyed the rear...all covered under warranty...

As for regretting sales...There was a lot of keyboards I wish I kept..too many to mention...from Crumar stuff..to Jupiter 8's..
I even wished I kept a Farfisa G7..
