OT What to do about FREE AVG - 03/16/09 10:51 AM

I assume some of you got the message of free AVG not being supported some time in June.
What do you recommend?

Go to the AVG website & download the new free one. The new AVG FREE is better than the previous one - mine is installed & working great. Just be careful which one you download - One is to pay for (with more bells & whistles) - one is a free 30 day trial of the Pay-for one & the other is completely free with free updates but with no user support as before.
Best wishes,
Tony

There doesn't seem to be a free offer now.
Thanks

Go to the AVG link above and read what the free version 8.5 doesn't protect against.
If you don't like that, as Kingfrog says try Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

The free version requires you to register (free) via email to continue using it beyond 60 days then again after 12months.

Man for me it's a nightmare trying to locate the box to place the key# for the registration on Avast's site. I've been trying all day.

I emailed their support. We'll see what happens.

After you download and install "Home Edition" Look for the spinning blue ball.
Right click on the ball in the lower right tray, selecy "About Avast" click Licence key..Paste it in there,

When you register they will send you the key to your email. The key is good for over a year then you just renew the key. I have it on 5 computers two of which are Online 24/7 and never had a virus, Good low resource AV program updates regularly on an AUTOMATIC basis.

Avast Home is the free one.

Well maybe the problem is I downloaded and installed it first than I registered. Now mwybe I need to download and install it again to see the blue spinning ball.
Thanks again,

brickboo, No need to reinstall it. All You need is to start the Avast from Start menu, and it will open window asking for serial number (there just Copy-Paste the serial number from the e-mail received from Avast). Absence of spinning ball (actually it doesn't spin all the time) might be some problem with installation (unstarted service or something like that). Also take care to uninstall AVG (or any other anti-virus) since there is no use to have more then one(and it's often dangerous because they try to 'desinfect' each othes virus database, making them useless).

In a year or so you will have to re register to keep getting auto updates....HOWEVER. you can use the SAME activation code on multiple computers so save it in your email in case you have or want more than one Internet PC.
